Wild mouse in my mouse cage?? Empty Wild mouse in my mouse cage??

Post by Josie705 Wed 04 Jan 2017, 2:50 am

So I checked my mouse cage just a few hours ago and found that instead of my 4 pet mice...that I now had 5. I had my two orange males, my black male, and my white male...and a brown one... I don't mind it being in there, better it be in my cage than be captured and killed by the dog, but I am slightly worried. My males have always gotten along. My black one hangs out with the darker of the orange ones, and the white one hangs out with the light orange one. They don't seem to mind this addition, but I am scared that it might be a girl and cause them to turn aggressive towards each other. From what I have seen, it looks like a male house or field mouse. I live on a farm so I am used to seeing them during cold weather, but I have never seen one in my pet mice cage. Any suggestions on how it got in there and what I should do?

Hi! Welcome to the forum!

First of all, males should not live together. It is very dangerous to keep males together, and just because a fight hasn't happened yet, doesn't mean it can't happen. A fight could break out any moment. Each male should have his own cage, not housed with other males. For more info on this, please see this section: https://petmousefanciers.forumotion.com/t19-keeping-mice-together-introducing-them

As for the wild mouse, that too is a danger to your mice. Wild mice carry diseases and parasites, and those diseases and parasites probably already transferred to your mice. To figure out what to do with the wild mouse, you can read through this page here: https://petmousefanciers.forumotion.com/t4-wild-mouse-mice-care-and-information

Good luck with your mice!

Hello and welcome!

Do you have a wire cage? Is it possible that the wild mouse could have got through the bars or a hole anywhere?
Is the wild mouse a similar size to your pet mice? If so you might want to be aware that your pet mice might escape!

The kindest thing for the wild mouse would be to release it safely, AnonymousMouseOwner posted the link about that - they aren't bred to be pets.

I'd potentially get your pet mice checked out by the vet in case the wild mouse has introduced illness or parasites to them too.

Hope you manage to sort things!
