Can gerbils live in a bin cage?
I know this is a mouse forum, and I'm asking about gerbils but here we go!
I'm just wondering if a gerbil (He is elderly, and lost his friend back in March) can live in a bin cage. I'm also wondering how the ventilation would work. Could I just drill many holes in the top and sides? Or, are they like mice where it has to be mesh on the top?

They certainly can! I reccomend mesh, just to be on the safe side, but it depends on if your gerbil is a chewer or not.

My gerbils lived in a bin cage. The top for most of their time here was a mesh topper I built, but before that I just cut out a hole in the lid. If you didn't want to ruin the lid, you could just build a separate one out of mesh. It's easy peasy!
I think holes in the lid and a couple rows on the sides would be okay, but mesh would probably be better. My old ladies still enjoyed digging around, so you might want to make sure you can still give him deepish bedding without anything falling out of side ventilation holes, too. What a mess that'd be!

Yes, my gerbils, Pip & Pup live in a bin cage. Most of the lid is cut out and I attached a mesh lid, that used to be used on a 20 gallon long tank. So the bin gives them more room as it is a little longer and wider then the tank.
