Dead baby opossums? (Sorry :P)
So today we decided to finally plant stuff in our vegetable patch. So my dad was walking to the shed to get extra topsoil & a wheelbarrow, and my mom and I were standing near my flower bed at the front of the backyard (near our house—the shed is at the back). Suddenly my dad called out, "Eek, there's a whole bunch f dead things here!"
Me being weird me, I went over to have a look (hey, it's kind of interesting! It's not like it's a dead human. That would be creepy). Three little baby possums, we deduced. All lying there next to each other, wet from the morning's rain and with no obvious signs of trauma or illness.
So my dad and I got to wondering, what killed these poor guys? I deduced that maybe the mother was killed, and her babies, kept in her den under the shed, got hungry and went looking for her. That's just a theory though. My mom suggested that maybe the mother killed them (not sure where that came from) but I said no, she probably would have killed them younger and eaten them because I'm pretty sure opossums do that as well as mice. My mom was like, ew! But I said, well, it's pretty smart because how else do you avoid attracting a coyote or something? My mom had to admit that was true so O was like score! I made my mom decide they're not super awful! Lol
Anyway it's really bugging me that the little guys had to die there Any other theories on what might have happened? They were all quite fully furred and I believe just under the 7 inches that would mean they would be fine on their own. I wish I would have noticed them sooner. Then we might have been able to save them.
I meant to take a photo but my dad cleared them away before I got a chance.

Ah, that rainstorm smiley! It took forever to make it a mousey. Lol. Good to see it used.
Poor possums. Could they have been poisoned? We mowed the lawn about a week ago and found a dead squirrel in the long grass. Eek!

Are there any plants in your garden that could have killed them if eaten? What a sad sight that must have been

Aw, how sad. It sounds like poison to me, too. It sounds like they just went to sleep and died.

Lol to be honest I've been looking for an opportunity to use that rainstorm smiley XDabeona wrote:Ah, that rainstorm smiley! It took forever to make it a mousey. Lol. Good to see it used.

I suppose poisoning is a possibility, although then surely the mother would have been dead or something too? I don't know, I'm pretty sure there aren't any poisonous plants in our garden, although of course I don't really know...
Yikes! Once I was putting a bag of compost onto the compost heap and there was a big dead rabbit there... Also without any obvious signs of trauma or illness... There better not be done poisoner around here. Lol. Although they didn't die near any plants, really. It was just out in the open in front of the shed, where there's just grass and two little harmless bushes. Hm.

It could have been unsafe pesticides that someone sprayed
