My Grayson <3 ;(
(Warning: Talk of mice being put down) I have realized over the past two months that Grayson hasn't been doing very great. He scratches himself on the neck and one eye (which is now infected) and has terrible breathing problems. I have token him to the vet time and time again, to be met with defeat. I am not really sure what to do. Should I have him Euthanized, or let him live out the rest of his life? He continues to eat and drink and care for himself, but I'm not sure if he's actually happy. I would really like your advice.

It's difficult for us to say without knowing him like you do. If he's still eating, drinking, running, playing....doing all the usual mousey things, I don't think I'd give up just yet. But if it's clear he's in pain and suffering, I would suggest talking to your vet to see what they think. In my experience, most vets will be pretty up front about your options. hugs

Re: My Grayson <3 ;(
In situations like this, i like to remind people that getting old isn't a disease. Getting old and having chronic health problems isn't always pretty but its part of life and it happens to everyone. people, and mice, just sort of accept it and carry on best they can. So, if he's doing all his normal mousey things and doesn't appear to have any pain, I'd let him do his thing.
however, if you have concerns, you can always get a second opinion from the vet. I think it's a beautiful thing that you worry about his happiness and i wish i could tell you what to do but its impossible without seeing him.
A lot of mice scratch at themselves, it's more of a habit...a really bad habit. I don't think it bothers then nearly as much as it bothers us! Im not sure what kind of breathing problems he has... Is it noisy or does he struggle to breath? Also, how old is he?

Re: My Grayson <3 ;(
Thanks for the reply, Grayson is about a year and a half old, and a Petstore mouse (not sure I'd that changes anything). He struggles to catch his breath, but it's not noisy. I hope I'm just making a big deal, and he's fine... (Well not 'Fine' but a least happy)scaredymouse wrote:In situations like this, i like to remind people that getting old isn't a disease. I think I found the culprit!!! I recently finished some of the food he had once, and he had skin irritation Both times!! I also gave them some other food brand before this skin-hurting one, and it never happened. I'm almost sure he has an allergy!

I know I said he might have a skin problem by food, but I was only able to get the food today. Problem is, he looks a lot worse today My dad is even saying that he might not live longer. I don't really know what to think. I know I thought I would get more mice after one passes, but this doesn't make me much happier, only a little bit. I hope he gets better, and I still have some hope

UPDATE: Grayson has improved slightly! His face isn't as swollen, but just red, though his eye has swollen shut He continues to care for himself and eat and drink, so that kinda brings up my spirits!

Re: My Grayson <3 ;(
Another Update: He is still eating, but rapidly losing weight He no longer opens his left eye, and it looks like it closed shut. Around his neck area, he has no fur anymore
I don't know what's causing this or anything, but I really don't think he'll put up with it anymore. He is still fighting, so we'll see what happens...

Re: My Grayson <3 ;(
Got some medicine for his skin irritation! He is never going to open his other eye ever again, but the vet said we still have a chance at him getting better! The only other thing to worry about is his weight (He's losing it rapidly), but he doesn't seem to be bothered at the moment! He is really enjoying cuddles today
