Possible Stroke After Doxy/Baytril? Empty Possible Stroke After Doxy/Baytril?

Post by chiroptera Fri 17 Aug 2018, 10:54 am

So, an employee at the local pet store was trying to find a new home for her sister's mouse, and knowing me since my roommates and I are in there almost daily, asked if I could take her in. Of course, I couldn't say no, so I took her in. She was in a Crittertrail cage, not the worst thing I've ever seen as it had a few levels, but I have no idea how often it was cleaned, what she was fed, or even how old she is. (They just said that she's "an adult".) When I got her, she was a little bit sniffly but otherwise okay.

A few of my roommates' rats were feeling bad, so we took them to the vet, and brought little Zola along, too, since she seemed to be sneezing quite a bit and I hoped to clear that up.

Well, it was an emergency vet clinic, and the exotics vet wasn't in; we didn't think it would make a huge difference, since we haven't had any issues with this clinic before. But neither the vet or the tech seemed to know anything about what they were doing- didn't know the difference between blood and poryphin, for example.

They sent us home with Baytril and Doxy - .02ml and .03ml for Zola the mouse, and .14ml and .09ml for the rats. However, since they've been on the medication, things just seem to be getting worse. Pip, one of the rats, had to be put down for a fast-beating heart and rapid breathing that looked like he was in far too much suffering, and now Everest, another of the rats, is behaving in a similar way.

And on top of that, it seems like Zola might have had a stroke? She's been dragging her right side around essentially, like it's difficult for her to move it correctly. She's been eating and drinking just fine, but she seems very lethargic and is just doing a lot of laying around.

Could the vet have somehow messed up with the medications? Are Doxycycline and Baytril unsafe for mice? We don't really know what to do. Worry

The other issue, is that despite a) never doing this before and b) saying they wouldn't on the phone, they charged for 5 separate office visits, so my roommate's CareCredit was charged over $400, so now we're kind of in a bind about going back.

Any thoughts on the matter would be appreciated.

Possible Stroke After Doxy/Baytril? Empty Re: Possible Stroke After Doxy/Baytril?

I’m so sorry you’re going through this. I’ve had baytril prescribed for past mice and I’m fairly certain doxycycline is commonly prescribed too, though I don’t have any experience with it. But maybe call and talk to an exoctic vet to see if they mixed/dosed the medicine correctly? The rats reaction seems like an overdose maybe? I’m sorry I’m not more help.

Thank you. I didn't think that either of them were unsafe for mice, I'm glad that it's at least not a widely known danger to mice.

An overdose is possible, though I'm wondering if they somehow compounded the wrong medication? It just... doesn't make sense that she was sniffling a little before taking her to the vet and then after it she's so bad I literally thought she was dying... Plus, the rats also being more sick doesn't help anything.

I'm not sure what to do, I don't want to keep giving her the medication if that's what's hurting her, but I also don't want the URI to come back. ;;

Can you call them up and explain what’s going on? I don’t know what their policy is, but my vet is usually pretty good about returning calls with questions or updates related to a previous visit - no extra cost. They could at least double check that they haven’t dosed your pets wrong!

Yeah, I'm about to. My roommate was on the phone with them earlier and they promised to call back... and they did, as they were leaving for work. Undecided So I have to call on their behalf. I personally like the clinic, but not this doctor, especially after this mess. Though there's a vet I like better but they're an hour out, and I don't drive yet. Ugh, this type of thing is so frustrating!

Update: The vets are refunding the ridiculous extra exam fees (they totalled $220 dollars JUST in exam fees), so that's a huge relief...

She said the exotic vet checked it over and would have prescribed the same thing, so they aren't really addressing any possible mistakes made, which is frustrating, but at least we'll be able to bring them in again either there or somewhere else.

Proud of myself for successful phone calling lol

I’m glad they refunded some of the money but how frustrating to not have any answers. I hope you’re able to get some soon.

And yay on the phone call! I have anxiety about that too (assuming that’s what you meant of course) so I know how hard that can be. Cheer
