Sudden Death.. No idea why
Unfortunately when I went to play with Agent Bauer tonight, I found him curled up dead in his pumpkin hammock. He was out running around doing normal mouse stuff earlier today, and I didn't notice anything wrong last night when he was out doing playtime with me like normal. I knew he was getting older, but I don't think he was super old. The only thing I'd noticed was a decrease in muscle mass recently, but not really weight loss in general.
Do you guys have any ideas as to what may have happened? I'm pretty upset over this... There were no signs of illness or anything, and it seems like he just went peacefully in his sleep. He started out really high-strung, but by the end he was just a little cuddle bug.
It's really weird not hearing that wheel going as I'm trying to sleep. I've already broken the tank down and cleaned everything... It sounds like it's a bit of a quick replacement, but there's a mouse at my work I've really clicked with ever since his litter came to the store and I think I may pick him up tomorrow after work. The smallest of six males that are in one tank, and the least eye-catching, but with the best personality. Seems like as good a way as any to honor Agent Bauer's memory since I picked him up on a whim a day after Mr. Biscuit's death because he was half the size of his littermate and I was worried for him.

I'm so sorry. It sounds like age may have been a factor. I think taking in another mouse is a great way to honor his memory.

I'm really sorry about Agent Bauer. I agree that adopting another mouse in his memory would be a really nice way to honor him

Re: Sudden Death.. No idea why
Sorry to hear about your little one if there weren't any symptoms leading up to his death, it sounds like whatever it was was very quick and sudden, so at least he didn't suffer. Perhaps something very sudden like a heart attack? Did you know his exact age? Or is it possible he was older than you thought?
Sounds like the best way to heal the mouse-shaped hole in your heart, is to get a new buddy. Agent Bauer would like that, I'm sure Rest in peace little guy.

If you want to find out what went wrong, I would call your vet and ask for a necropsy. Keep his body refrigerated, not frozen, for better results. It's the only way to get any sort of accurate result. Odds are there was something wrong internally that was asymptomatic. I'm so sorry you lost little Bauer. It really is so upsetting.

Re: Sudden Death.. No idea why
definitely not too soon, i agree, the best way to honor the ones we lose is by giving another needy animal a home.
how old was he again? just recently, my sweet Delilah suffered two strokes, one of which was really bad. and although she appears to have recovered pretty well... I imagine there are more to come. so we're enjoying the time we have. Delilah is only a year old though. Mice aren't too different from people in the types of genetic predispositions they have toward high blood pressure, heart disease, cancer, blood clot, sleep apnea, diabetes, obesity, etc. So he could have easily had one of the "silent killers" just like people do and you often don't find out until an event occurs like a stroke or heart attack. My guess is that he had a something like that happen. It sounds like he was curled up peacefully, though, which is always nice.

Re: Sudden Death.. No idea why
Yeah, the way I found him makes me think it was something like a heart attack that happened pretty suddenly. I don't really have a good estimate on his age. I got him because I thought he was younger than the mouse he was with at the store because he was twice its size. I found out later he was full grown, just extremely tiny, so there's a decent chance he had something slightly wrong his whole life that just didn't really have a lot of symptoms.
I picked up the mouse from work today though, and Sir Spam is enjoying not having to share all his toys with five other males larger than him. He's already riding around on my shoulder while I walk around the house and really likes sitting in the hood of my jacket and bruxing in my ear. I do know he's not fully grown because I've seen his whole litter since they came in a couple weeks ago; any idea what age that would put him at? He has that 'teenage' mouse look, but I'm not sure really how many months that would put him at.

Re: Sudden Death.. No idea why
congrats on your new little buddy <3
if you post a picture, we can have a look and see if we can make a guess on his age.

Re: Sudden Death.. No idea why
lol I've got a couple pictures, but none that are very good. He's constantly on the move. He's mostly white with dark eyes and splotches of brindle on his rump. He was both the smallest in his litter and the only one that wasn't a satin (so, the one that would get sold last, even though he has the best personality).
I wasn't sure if I was going to immediately get him, but I went into work that day to find one of the hamsters killed by his cagemates and that kind of sealed it for me since male mice will do the same thing. Plus, I would walk around and show him off to customers since he's so sweet, so I'd already bonded with him.
Fun story: I made him his first popsicle stick creation tonight, and I think it blew his little mind. He just kind of ran in circles around it sparking and then hid in my sleeve lol
