Safe wood? Empty Safe wood?

Post by AnonymousMouseOwner Mon 29 Aug 2016, 12:47 am

Does anyone know what woods are safe for mice? I have looked online but I only find lists of safe wood for rats. Thanks.

Smile
I would think if certain types of wood are safe for rats, then they would be safe for any type of rodent. But I'm sure that the long time mouse owners on here would know more about that.

I can't find a list either. It seems much easier to find information aimed at rats, gerbils or hamsters than mice.

Generally though - if a wood is safe/unsafe for rats it'll be the same for mice.

Aspen is safe on its own- but as a bedding it has a greater risk of parasite hitchhikers, is usually more dusty and mice are more allergy prone to it. than paper.

I know basswood is safe if you give it the old bake it forever treatment (and get it from a tree you know hasn't been sprayed with toxic chemicals) to kill any bugs on it. Eddie likes to gnaw little basswood twigs from my mom's house. She doesn't spray her yard so I know it's safe, and she even baked a pan of them for me last time she made some BBQ since the thing was going to be on at low temps for like 6 hours anyways!

Apple wood is safe, and certain species of willow. These are commonly found sold as chews. I'm pretty certain java wood, cork, cholla, aspen, maple, manzanita, and rubberwood are safe. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Maple isn't safe for chinchilla's, so I would avoid it just to be safe. All the other woods should be safe. Chinchilla's are so sensitive to so many things, i think it would be pretty safe to use their safe wood list for mice. Here is their list:

apple
arbutus
ash
aspen
bamboo
blackberrry
blackcurrant
cholla
cottonwood
crabapple
dogwood
Ocotilla
elm
grapevine
hawthorn
hazelnut
kiwi
magnolia
manzanita
mulberry
pear
pecan
pine - MUST BE KILN DRIED WHITE
poplar
quince
rose hip
sycamore
willow (but not white willow)

I assumed maple was safe since it's one of the beddings listed as ok here.

I've never seen it either. Maybe it's commonly sold in farm supply stores? Or a UK thing?

Is pomegranate wood safe? We just trimmed our pomegranate tree...
Edit: Never mind, we remembered someone we know has an ash tree, so we are going to get some branches off it this evening.

Baking it to get rid of all the little micro bugs and stuff would be a good idea if you're getting it from outside Smile
