Squeaking

Bert started squeaking a few hours ago, they are the same loudness and pitch he has been using to get my attention when he wants a treat. He lives alone. They remind me of the hiccups. So, my first question since this is my first pet mouse...do mice get hiccups? The squeaking stops when he is eating or drinking but picks right back up when he isn't. Should I be concerned that this is something worse than hiccups? Worry

I guess mice could get hiccups? They have a diaphragm and I think that anything with a diaphragm can get hiccups. Please do correct me if I'm wrong!
(Hiccups in humans is a sudden contraction of the diaphragm which causes you to breathe in suddenly, but the incoming air is stopped suddenly by the glottis (the opening to the vocal chords) hence causing a hiccup).

I'd personally take him to the vet just to be safe (even if the vet can't find anything wrong, I always think its better to know!)

I don't know for sure if they get hiccups but it is certainly seems like they could. However, it shouldn't go on for several hours.

How is he doing now? Is he still eating and drinking and using the wheel? What kind of bedding is he on? How does his breathing look (fast, slow, heavy, normal)? How long have you have this mouse? Depending on the answers to these questions, I should be able to help you figure out what the problem could be and whether or not a vet visit is necessary.

Of course, you are the best judge of what you see going on and if you are concerned, better safe than sorry- go to the vet. It sounds like he's having some breathing problems but if we can identify the cause, it might not need a trip to the vet.
