Re: The survivors of the original 19 babies
I'd personally say "Better safe than sorry," but I understand. Sounds like such a sweet sight! Hopefully it was something like Mouseketeer said.

Re: The survivors of the original 19 babies
I'm also thinking that it was a natural death, and the adult mice simply disposed of them. Of course, there is no way of knowing what really happened.
The last time I successfully used a nanny was in 2010. I have the cutest picture of "Auntie" Sloan hugging her eight little charges with her tail. Yet I will not use a nanny again. Sloan was happy to take over the parenting, keeping the babies stimulated and washed. This left the real mother free to ignore her babies for several hours at a time, when they had no milk. The babies were loud. Looking back, they were probably hungry.
For the next litter, I kept the mother alone with her babies. She was a MUCH better mother! She had to raise her own kids, so she rose to the challenge. She never left the nest for hours at a time. And surprise, surprise, her litter was so quiet that it was eerie. Happily, it meant that they had no reason to cry.

Thanks for the support and feed back! I did a head count last night and today. 9 babies yesterday, 9 babies today. Mommy and Oreo are doing well. The pups are now 12 days old! Here's a pic:

Re: The survivors of the original 19 babies
13 days old and eyes are open!
I wanted to have a portrait for each, but they move to much and the pictures were a blur.
Daisy (mom) and Oreo (nanny) seem to be have been eating more yesterday. when i went to give the food, i noticed their bowl was very empty. they eat a decent amount but don't really finish and leave the stuff they don't like (like corn, but thats ok since its not good for them anyways). But they ate it all yesterday. Are the later days of nursing more demanding?
