Hi,

I'm new to mice (new-ish to rodents; I had the world's greatest rat two years ago) and about two days ago my mother ran into the house shouting my name with her hands cupped. When she opened them, there was a precious baby brush mouse (pictures below)! My mother said she fell out of our friend's van while he was pulling out of the driveway. We couldn't find a nest when he returned. There just wasn't any sign of mice anywhere in the vehicle or nearby. I live in the desert, so there's a lot of bushes and sand. If the baby mouse's family is right under my nose, I just can't find them.

Anyway, I named her Bean. I'm pretty sure she's female because of the recent appearance of nipple marks on her tummy. She is fed goat milk every two hours on the dot and stimulated with a Q-tip to go to the bathroom. When we found her I gave her Pedialyte electrolyte solution in case she was dehydrated. Her best friend is the heat lamp I purchased today. I'm looking forward to watching her develop and hope she makes it to adulthood! I just wish she had littermates to keep her company.

Are her hands and feet okay? I see that they have dark pigment but her toes look strange in the photo. She's so young... I hope she makes it. But babies that young don't usually survive without their mothers, despite our best efforts. I just wanted to prepared you for that possibility.

I gave her hands and feet a look after reading what you said. Sadly, it doesn't look like dark pigment after all. I thought it was, too. The dark spots look a little deformed, like she was injured during her fall from the van. I'm sure this lowers her chances of survival. However, she is still active with healthy eating, pooping, and sleeping habits. She doesn't appear to be in pain and the "wounds" actually look--for lack of a better word--cauterized. Poor baby.
