My mouses eyes have closed
I have an 11-month-old female mouse. Her eyes have closed and she's sleeping a lot more than usual. There's no swelling or discharge, her eyes are just closed. She only eats if I hand her the food, but even then she doesn't eat much. I also haven't seen her drinking any water. Does anyone know whats wrong with her?

That's... strange. Could you get any pictures or even better, a video? That would help us figure out what could be wrong. It isn't good if she's not drinking, they can become dehydrated very quickly, how long has she not been drinking?

The last time I saw her drink was yesterday, but I'm not sure if she drank before that and I just didn't see. Here's a video of her. file:///C:/Users/MCP.MCP/Desktop/WP_20170424_200700Z.mp4

It is possible she's drinking without you seeing. I cannot see that video, it is on your computer meaning only you can see it. You'll need to upload it to a video hosting website for everyone to be able to see it, like YouTube. So her eyes are closed all the time? Or just at certain times? Sometimes mice will squint their eyes when they are intensely sniffing something.

Yeah, her eyes are closed all the time. She might be drinking without me seeing, but I really don't think so because she's always sleeping. She has only come out twice, but only for a few seconds. And I'm not sure if this is relevant, but she's not sleeping in her nest. She's sleeping in a hide that's a lot more exposed which I thought was weird.

Re: My mouses eyes have closed
It is unusual if she's sleeping out in the open and doesn't normally. It is natural for mice not to come out during the day, however. They are nocturnal. I'm not a vet so I'm not sure what could be wrong. Hopefully someone else on here can give their opinion. Were you able to get a picture? That would help.

Here's a picture. You can't see in the pic, but there's a little bit of redness around her eyes and on the top of her head. She has gone back to her nest a few times since I sent that. I understand that you're not a vet and I really appreciate you helping me. I just really want to figure out what's wrong with her.

Re: My mouses eyes have closed
If you're seeing redness around her eyes, it could be conjunctivitis or maybe an allergy to something. What type of bedding are you using? Some mice develop allergies to wood bedding. Try switching to paper bedding and see if that helps. Even newspaper (no shiny magazine-like pages), shredded paper, paper towel, and/or toilet tissue would be ok. If they don't clear up in a few days after trying that, I would take her to the vet.

I have been using aspen bedding for 7 months. So wouldn't this have happened a long time ago if she was allergic to it?

Nope. Allergies can develop at any time.

Ok, I'll change the bedding and see if that helps. Do you know if that would also explain the lethargy?

It could. Or she may be sick. Try the paper bedding. If you don't see any improvement in the next few days, please schedule an appointment with your veterinarian.

Update! One of her eyes is open and she's eating a tiny bit more.
