Eye infection
My pet mouse has what appears to be an eye infection. The fur around the eye has either been scratched away or fell out. And his one eye is almost shut. Does anyone have any advice on what it could be or what I should do????

Re: Eye infection
I think this post is the wrong section, just a heads up!
Has he ever been treated for mites? What is he eating? How often is the cage and nesting area cleaned?
It is possible he has mites, allergies, or an infection. In this case I would see a vet...but that might just be me.

Re: Eye infection
In addition to the questions already asked, what kind of bedding are you using?
If it is infected, the mouse will need to see a vet for antibiotics. However, sometimes eye problems can be caused by their environment. After we get more information from you, we might be able to help you avoid a vet visit.

Eye infection
I'm using shredded paper bedding.fragrance free. All living things brand. I've had this mouse and others for 6 months and have had no mite problem before. Just moved into a new place 2 weeks ago .could mites have been in the new place ?? I'm not sure. How would I check?? And I clean the cage spot every 2 days and I strip em every 6. Should I quarantine her away from the others? Thanks everyone

Re: Eye infection
I wouldn't move her from the others. They've already been exposed to whatever it is and it would just stress her out more.
One option to know if it's mites is to go in to the vet and they can do a skin scraping and check. But most of us just treat as a precaution when we first bring our mice home and later if they show any signs of mites. There's info on that here: https://www.petmousefanciers.com/t17-itching-hair-loss-and-parasites. If they've never been treated, chances are they do have mites.
Does the eye and/or eyelid look gunky or red or swollen? Or is it just the thinning fur and excess scratching? What are you feeding them and what's the crude protein?

Re: Eye infection
If you can post a picture, it would be really helpful. But we know it's not always easy to get one though!

Eye infection
I'll have to go to pet store and look at good bag. I dump it in a large Tupperware bin soon as I get it. So no idea on crude protein. No gunky stuff. Just thinning fur. Haven't noticed any scratching, but not able to watch all day. But when I do I haven't seen any. And maybe she's kinda lethargic. Not sure if it's the eye thing or cuz I quarantined her. Thanks so much for all the advice. She's by far my favorite. And I'm worried to death . Not sure how to send a picture on here but I'll look into it

Re: Eye infection
And is there a home remedy for mites? (If it is that) I do not have money for a vet visit right now.

Re: Eye infection
You don't need a vet visit for mites. I picked up the ivermectin at my local cattlestore, never needed a vet trip! Ivermectin kind of /is/ a home remedy, even if vets reccomend it too.

Re: Eye infection
Thanks for the advice. Heading to the feed store now to get the invermectin. I read this morning that it should be applied topically. Have you ever heard of this? I tried small animal flea and lice spray cuz that's what the pet store recommended , but it's only been 1 day. Not long enough to see if it's working.

Re: Eye infection
Yes, topical ivermectin. There's a link in that thread above to the exact product on Amazon. All the dosing and application info is there too.
I don't recommend those sprays sold for small animals at pet stores. They often don't work, and many times people end up with sick or dead mice from those. So please be very careful with that.
