Breeders Empty Breeders

Post by AnonymousMouseOwner Sun 04 Jun 2017, 7:30 pm

So, I'm not planning to get more mice soon, but for the future, I have been looking for a good breeder. I *think* I finally found a good breeder. This breeder's mice are really pretty. They have HUGE EARS! And they have a type of mouse I've always wanted, I can't remember what it's called, but they are black with red on their belly. And, a small concern of mine, they seem to have a setup that looks like a really boring setup for mice. They are in cages the size of Crittertrails, and all they have is food, water, and nesting material. Not even a wheel? It's like the cages you see in laboratories. Is that something that is normal for breeders? Their mice look happy and healthy though, so I'm not sure. Just confused Confused

It's not standard for all breeders, but for some breeders yes. Controversial going by pet standards perhaps, but they breed to exhibition standards. I remember a few breeders mentioning that their mice didn't even bother with wheels when they had them.

There are definitely breeders out there who put the effort into maintaining "proper" housing for everyone. I wouldn't brush one off for not doing it that way though.

Ditto.  Another thing to remember is that the mice they are selling aren't their pets.  It's not that they don't care about them, but often times their set ups are intended to be temporary.
