Mouse Sneezing
i recently got a second one of those hanging coconut hides and didn't realize until after i let Lucy play in it that it was a bit dusty and dirty inside. she was only in it once or twice but she started sneezing constantly about the same time. it was last night and she's still sneezing a bit. she's been in a different one before so i don't believe it's an allergy. i don't believe it's "box shock" as i've had her for 4 months and she's been out of the cage without any problems and have never seen her sneeze before. since it started around the time she was exposed to that i'm hoping that she just has some dust caught in her lungs and not a URI. but i don't know if it's normal to be sneezing this much if it's just dust. she's also breathing a little harder and not as active. though it just started last night so is it too soon to be worrying about a URI? fortunately she's not making those clicking sounds that my Ethel was making before she passed.
so should i be worried? any advice?

I would think if it was just dust on the coconut, the sneezing would have cleared up a short while after removing it. What sort of bedding is she on? Anything else new? Have you done a full clean since removing the dusty toy?

i've been using Kaytee clean and cozy for a few weeks now without any issue. the coconut wasn't in her cage. it was during out of cage time when it happened. but today is cleaning day anyway so will do that. only other new thing was a wooden seesaw toy that i removed a little before posting. i guess it's possible she was sneezing before and just didn't notice but idk.

Hmmm. If she continues to sneeze a lot and her breathing still seems labored after the full clean, I think I would go to the vet. Good luck.

Re: Mouse Sneezing
Is there baking soda in Kaytee Clean and Cozy. I think shredded paper is safer than any bedding I have found. I bought a small shredder and it is no trouble to keep plenty on hand.

I searched Kaytee Clean and Cozy and found that the Birthday Cake version has this warning: "Warning: This product contains wood dust. A chemical known to the state of California to cause cancer."

All Kaytee clean & cozy that is produced or may possibly be sold in California has that warning. It's a bit scary sounding I know, but so many things that are produced or sold in California have that same warning. So much so its kind of lost any meaning. I think I read somewhere that that warning is even put on buildings. Any paper or wood based bedding will have wood dust.
