Hello! My mouse is 1 year and 5 months old which isn't that old (I think), but it isn't young either. I want to be prepared for anything that might come up, so I was wondering if there are any behavioral changes or health issues that I should watch out for as she gets older. Which changes should I worry about and which changes are completely normal? Also, at what age are mice considered elderly?

Most mice only live 1.5-2 years, so that range and any age above that is considered elderly. I believe it's normal to lose a little weight, but losing a ton of weight suddenly isn't good. Their fur might also look a little scruffy. Some elderly mice will slow down a bit too, and take it more easy. This doesn't mean they should be doing absolutely nothing, but they might spend less hours on the wheel, for example.

I would say chalking up all their lethargy to being old is an easy to make mistake. In my experience most mice up to about 2 years old are still quite active. They may sleep more but when awake they move around good still and still enjoy wheels and getting up to stuff like chewing or moving things about.

I would caution against blaming everything on aging.

One thing though, is that climbing skills diminish with age. So if you have a mouse that is used to high wire acts, the chances of them falling increases quite a bit with age. A short fall is not the end of the world but you don't want stuff too high up and you may want to make it easier to access water and maybe consider building little ramps to make it easier to get up on wheels.

Also, older mice like new treats and enjoy exploring new things. If possible, a trip to a new clean couch or bed (if they are tame and won't be in any danger) could be a good outing. Or just some cool new toys with new textures.
