Basil's Problem Empty Basil's Problem

Post by stephlisa Fri 24 Nov 2017, 9:37 am

Basil is really starting to worry me.  Today he rushed out of his hammock and along the side of the cage as if he had no control and ended up in a little heap of mouse when he crashed into the other side of the cage.

He then came back to the real world and started running away from me and being normal.  Then he ran around for bit doing normal mousey things before doing a very similar rush around at which I decided he was coming to see me whether he liked it or not.  He's now snuggling in my lap.  He's much quieter than normal though, not exploring everywhere.

When it happens he seems to completely lose all spacial awareness and all sense of who he is.  Its quite terrifying.

Any advice?  I'll be ringing the vets when I can.

I don't know what this could be, but it does sound scary to see. I hope all will be ok. Please keep us posted.

Poor little fellow. I'm better at anatomy and physiology than musculine psychology, but might it be a panic attack? Is he still sharing quarters with Pumpkin? Has he had one of these incidents while out in your "protective custody"?

Its not happened while he's been out with me, but its only happened the once. Yes, they do still live together and currently still will be. The boys both seem very happy together, there's been no other mad behaviour and Basil has recently been more confident and assertive towards Pumpkin.

Pumpkin has always been the dominant mouse, but recently Basil hasreally come out of his shell. Before, if Pumpkin had something he really wanted, he'd just let Pumpkin have it, now, if I don't give them both a tasty apple treat, he will steal Pumpkin's (and Pumpkin doesn't fight back or anything, just goes to find some other food).

A panic attack seems unlikely to me, but I'm being open-minded.

Sadly I can't get a vet visit until next week so I'll just have to keep an eye on them over the weekend and watch out for any other symptoms. However, Basil is now completely normal and up to his usual mischief.

Basil's Problem Empty Re: Basil's Problem

I once witnessed a mouse have a panic attack, when I inadvertently gave it a horribly rude awakening while it was hanging out in one of my sweatshirts in the laundry pile. It was freezing in the house, so in one grand motion I grabbed the sweatshirt and slung it overhead to climb inside. Poor little mousie landed on the floor, ran a few lightning-fast circles around the bedroom, then disappeared through the door and down the hall, and none of us ever saw it again.

Years later, on a trip to the vet for a simple pedicure (I am much too clumsy to cut even my own nails), my little April had what the tech described as a panic attack when she was taken away from me for the procedure -- frantic leaps out of her transport bin and nearly off the examination table, finally blacking out and needing oxygen administered. Her next visit, the vet was hesitant to examine her because of the previous experience, but I said she would probably be fine since I was there with her, so the doctor gave April her one-year checkup while she casually wandered up my right arm, across my shoulders, and down the left arm.

Maybe what you saw is little Basil waking from a mousie equivalent of a nightmare, or suddenly recalling some past trauma (real or imagined). Or maybe it's a hormone thing. Any of those possibilities seem like things he could eventually work through, forget, or outgrow, with the only treatment necessary being time and comfort. Let us hope it's nothing more than that.

>kiss-kiss< to both your little guys.

Hello all,

So we went to the vets this morning and obviously he seemed right as rain to the vet...however, based on what I could tell her we're treating for a middle ear infection with baytril (and the tiniest of doses because Basil isn't yet full grown) and seeing how that goes. We'll review his condition in a week and then 2 weeks time and see whether the Baytril has had any effect,

Wish us luck medicating our not very tame boy...(he *hated* the first dose big time, lots of squeaking and wriggling occured, but never once did he try and bite me which I thought was interesting)

He sounds like such a good boy. Hope you don't have too much trouble medicating him.
