New Bin Cage [featuring Sliding Door!]
I picked up a bigger bin for the girls a while back, and then when I adopted Pumpkin I set it up for them! It's a 19g Sterilite bin, so there's quite a bit more space for the girls in there. I'm pretty happy with it for the most part, though I think I need to get a heated knife of some sort for any more bins, because I keep cracking the plastic. I bought a drill that actually works this time though, which made things MUCH easier, and gives the bin a cleaner look.

I know it's a little bare at the moment, but it'll be much nicer once I fill it up a bit more than it is right now. But it does allow for two wheels, so Yahtzee got a new Silent Spinner (her favorite) and Checkers gets to keep her flying saucer!
I was going to rig up a wire cage door like I did on their old bin, but the cage was on sale the first time I bought it and $21 for a flimsy wire cage was just... not worth it. Instead I was planning on just using the lid as access (since I ended up using it most of the time anyway, because the wire door was always more of a hassle sadly), but I found this sliding door tutorial by Curtis Lasane, and couldn't resist trying that out. It works very well.
Here's a video of the door in action!
I accidentally cut the bin a bit too low to the ground, so the bedding is currently escaping if I open the door. That's my fault, though, and I'll probably fix that soon. Other than that and a few other mishaps on my part, the door is a great idea. Cheap, easy to attach, and very easy access to your mice. I am a little bit worried that they'll be able to chew through the mesh as it is rather thin, but I don't think that they will (and of course I'll be keeping a close eye on it). My only other concern is that there isn't a latch so technically the door is unsecured, but from the inside there's no way for them to open it. I still think I'm going to try to figure out some sort of latch, though!
Let me know what you think!
Also @Peachy feel free to use any of these images or any of my bin cage images in this gallery for the Proper Housing thread if you'd like!

Re: New Bin Cage [featuring Sliding Door!]
Oh my gosh, this is hilarious. I made my hamster a bin cage today and saw the same video... considered sharing it for a minute but also worried pets would chew out. But, I also bought the same bin, only much bigger. I'll look through the pictures later.
I used a utility knife to score the lid a few times, and then
heating it up and going back over once more worked perfect. The window I made on the side was a nightmare, though. We had to saw the whole thing with a heated butter knife. No cracks though!

That's very strange- they show up fine for me when logged in, but when I'm logged out I get an error. Any ideas why this would be happening @Peachy?

That's hilarious omg! Definitely would love to see pics of the hamster bin when you get a chance. c:
And yeah, the lid didn't give me any trouble at all, (except for how I, uh, accidentally cut a chunk out of my thumb, but that was user error) but trying to cut through the actual bin was the worst. I think I'm gonna get a woodcarving/hot knife at work (JoAnn fabrics) and see if that will work better; I did take a lighter to the utility knife and it didn't even budge with that. Everything I've watched/read says that hot knives go through like butter, and my experience was... less than buttery, at the very least.
Like I said, I'll be watching to make sure that there isn't any chewing of the mesh to make sure no one escapes, and once Pumpkin's new bin is done, the original bin will be available if I need to move them back.

I can see them when I'm logged in and out. What kind of error is it?

I did that too. On our way to get stitches. Hopefully.chiroptera wrote: I, uh, accidentally cut a chunk out of my thumb

I can look into pictures later, but try clearing cookies. That fixes lots of stuff.

Oh no!! Thankfully my cut isn't deep enough to need stitches. My roommate's mom is a nurse and she would have made me if it was bad enough.
But I hope yours heals up soon!!

Re: New Bin Cage [featuring Sliding Door!]
Five stitches. That brand new knife nearly took off a big old chunk of thumb, and she said it'd probably take a year for that nail to look normal again. Our synchronicity here is pretty fun, but please don't get hurt anymore.
Your bins both look great, btw. I still need to drill holes and attach mesh, then I can share mine. I'm not sure my husband will let me anywhere near that bin, though. lol I was supposed to clean the last cage I need to get a picture of tomorrow, but I might wait a couple days. I've got a list of pics to add to the housing page now! I'll aim for Thursday.

I see the error now, but I don't know what it is. It looks like your links might be getting changed, but I don't know anything about Google Photos. Maybe try using ServImg?

We should both probably avoid hurting ourselves, as funny as it is that we managed to do the same thing at the same time. Maybe both of us not getting hurt can be the next trend?
And thank you! I'm mostly happy with it, I might try to sell it once I make the girls a remodel. We'll have to see.
Honestly I'm surprised my roommates let me finish the bin after that!

I don't have them saved on either of my computers so I don't know if ServImg will work... it's very strange since as far as I know all my other photos in other threads (all from Google photos) are showing up fine? I re-linked them, so maaaaybe they'll work now?

See I was thinking, since you seem to do stuff first, it's probably all your fault. But yes, let's both try not get hurt! lol My thumb is pretty sore and gross looking.
I can see the pictures now. Hopefully others can too!

That's possible. I bought a woodcarving knife today to hopefully cut through bins better, so let's hope I don't hurt myself with that. You don't need stitches and a burn wound.
Mine is mostly okay at this point, though sometimes it'll ache; it looks pretty gross too. And if I look at my finger from a certain angle, I can see the divot where I cut myself.
I can see them while logged out now, too, so hopefully that fix worked.
