New Mousey Mom
Hello! As of Saturday I am a new mom to two young female mice named Peaches and Pepper. Peaches is very outgoing and approaches my hand when spot cleaning, while Pepper is still very shy and is taking awhile to settle in, but I can still tell she is a very sweet girl. Any tips, especially since they are a pair and not a group? Thanks!

Patience. Any animal is going to have an adjustment period when going to a new home - there are lots of things that can help that other people are more qualified to suggest but especially right after a move to a new place, patience is key.

Thank you! I am doing the best I can to give her time and space, along with not disturbing her while spotcleaning. What about when it comes time to clean the cage? Since she is so uncomfortable with me I am not sure the easiest way to get her into a travel cage with the least amount of stress, as just leaving her in the cage while cleaning won’t help and just cause more stress.

Unfortunately, those are your two main options - clean while she's in there or remove her for a little bit. When I've had skittish rats (I'm newer to mice) I've cleaned half the enclosure one day, half the other day. That way there is still half a cage to hide in without being disturbed. It seems to work pretty well. There is still some stress but not as much, and none of the stress is associated with being handled.

Welcome!
I use a tube or box to move new/nervous mice over to the play bin (escape proof) while I clean. I feel like it’s less stressful than trying to hide in the cage while I’m digging around.
