Housing Elderly Mice
I'm thinking of moving my mice into a less complicated cage now that they are older. Right now I have this set up (not mine, but I have the same one)
It has three levels plus they this outdoor playground
I'm mainly concerned that traveling between the three levels is getting too difficult for the mice, but I don't want to stress them out by downsizing. There's a tunnel in the cage that goes straight up and more tunnels on the outside connecting the different floors, so there's several ways to get to each floor. The cage is on a table and connects to a second table (with playground). I don't lock them in their cage, I have no other pets and the tables are "walled in."

Re: Housing Elderly Mice
Modular cages are far too small and shouldn't be used in most circumstances. Besides I can't imagine how cleaning that out would look...
What cage are they in right now? Are they starting to slow down or are they simply old? Because if they're still active as ever I see no point in a downgrade...

Re: Housing Elderly Mice
This is my full set up. I switch out different extensions, toys, etc. The dimensions are 22"L x 12.5"W x 22"H for just the cage part. I want to try a diy bin cage, but I'm not going to with these mice. I have so many cages and extensions at this point my mom might kick me out.
What I ended up doing was taking out the third tier of the cage, that way they still have "their cage," but it makes the incline less steep. They never go in the middle level anyways, so the middle is now technically the top. I only have two mice as of now, one has slowed down a bit so I'm trying to make it easier for her to travel (and find her friend).
