Urgent please help

I just loosely made this account, my mouse is having a seizure or a stroke or somethingg like that and has been for atleast the past 30 mi utes, how do I help should I remove my other 3 girls with her? How do I tell if it’s seizure or stroke, she is very wobbly and cannot Walk up low slopes without falling backwards

My apologies no one was able to get to you more quickly. Not many people are up at 3am and this forum is pretty inactive as is. Is she still with you?

If so, I would suggest seeing a vet for more clarity if they’re open today (if not, try an emergency vet). They will definitely be able to give you some quick and clear answers.

Best of luck with your girl, that sounds like an absolutely horrible experience to go through.

Yeah, it’s difficult to watch. I took her 3 sisters out and got her to eat some oats (I wet a few down because I couldn’t tell if she was getting water, with her head being so shaky and all) and she was pretty eager to eat. She would grab an oat and sometimes she could sit and eat it and other times she’d fall on her side and just lay there and eat it. I let her alone for the night and last I checked she was wobbling around making some little burrows. If there’s a good sign I guess it’s that she is still eating her favorite treats and making tunnels which I know she loves to do. I do think I want to take her to the vet, but it somewhat worries me. She isn’t a particularly cuddly, love-to-be-handled mouse. She doesn’t seem to really have fear of human and will sit on my hand from time to time, and usually comes out when she hears me, but she doesn’t really like to be handled. For a vet to do a check up, they’d have to get close and handle her and constrain her right? Last night at one point I tried getting her to go in my hand, and she struggled pretty hard. I just wonder how harsh the vet would have to be with her, and more importantly if that could hurt her more, especially because I’m not completely sure what happened to her yet. I know vet sometimes have to handle their animals in ways the owners don’t like, but she just seems so extremely fragile right now. I do have a vet for her though-so I’ll see about appointments with them. I think she may have had a stroke? I don’t know. When she was eating her oats she could use both her front paws to do it. But she was just so wobbly and she would randomly fall or do a little bounce. She just looked really weak while doing it, but I stayed with her for almost 4 hours during it and she seemed to be trying to go about her regular activities, and while Taking her longer to accomplish, she was able to burrow and other things. She’s also had issues with scratching herself in the past, which I don’t know if that has to do with any of this. Pretty sure it’s allergy related, I took out a bunch of different toy materials in this cage like pumice etc and that seemed to help. I checked on her and she has herself in a little cavity she’s dug in the bedding, under about an inch or so of loose bedding. It looks like she’s just down there napping, since I can see her breathing.

A good thing to have on hand when you have mousies (and other sorts of animal companions, in fact) is baby cereal powder. It can be mixed up to different consistencies, depending on if you need to help with hydration (make with more water) but want to avoid aspiration or if you want some nutritious treat balls (make with less water and roll pinches of the resulting paste in more dry cereal powder). You can add even more nutrition, not to mention more taste interest, by mixing in smooshed banana, peanut or sunflower seed butter, sesame seeds ... use your imagination.

I had a brain short-out a few days ago. Migraine aura without headache. Mine are pretty cool and don't stop me from keeping on with what I'm doing. I feel bad for your little girl, having to go through such an ordeal. When she's at the vet, if it helps to keep her calm make sure you stay with her during the examination, and even hold her yourself if necessary. If the vet is holding her and you notice the sticking out tail very tense, just put your finger against it and see if she will wrap around for reassurance. Please let us know how she's doing.

Thank you so much! All the vets offices are closed today- so the plan is to call in tomorrow morning as soon as we can and get any possible opening there is. For baby cereal powder, would that be like the gerber banana oatmeal? I have some of that on hand. I’m also ordering some critical care. I also have a kitten milk replacement- would it be wise to put that in the cereal? My girl has been kinda on and off today, she got up and I have her some of her favorite chew toys, which she actually had a good chew on. Then she settled in for a long-about 3 hour nap. She woke up for a bit and ate a gerber puff I gave her and wandered around for 10 or so minutes. She’s back in one of her hides resting now. It can be kind of hard to watch her, she has a bit of trouble lifting her feet over the bedding but I’m afraid to take it out because she needs something soft to land on if she falls. I’m hoping I can get her to the vet and find out what happened with her and what I need to do. ~thank you for your help

Gerber works fine; probably any brand would be OK. I primarily used multi-grain flavor, for the possibility of a wider nutritional profile, but also had the banana oatmeal for variety. (P.S. The barley flavor flopped in Mousieville. I think, at the least, it mixed up too sticky.)

I don't know how milk replacement in the cereal might affect palatability for your little sick one, but it doesn't seem that it would have any negative effect on nutrition. Maybe it could be served separately in a little dish to see if mousie would like to lap some up for hydration therapy.

Mousies just by nature sleep a lot. Sick ones may sleep even more, and that can help them to heal -- that is, if it's just resting sleep, and not lethargy or diminished consciousness. Make notes of your observations regarding her waking and sleeping habits and activities, so you can provide any necessary information to her doctor. Maybe even film her, so you don't have to come up with the exact words you need to help the vet to understand the problem and work on a diagnosis.

I think I’ll try the milk, just because what I can get her to eat right now is mostly oats and gerber puffs, and a bit of the baby cereal. I’d like to give her a little more variety and nutrition to keep up her energy. I’m usually out more during the day but she’s almost always awake when I feed her (usually around 10-11 pm). Yesterday she was pretty active in the morning and slept the whole afternoon except for the occasional move to a different hide house. Her sisters, which are healthier, slept more than she did yesterday but not by a ton. And she’s always been a very active mouse, the most active of all her sisters by far. I’m hoping the fact that she’s still eating and burrowing and chewing on her favorite toys is a good sign that she isn’t in pain. She woke up earlier this morning and climbed over a bendy bridge I had placed in the cage last night, so I think she’s getting a little steadier. She has a vet appointment in about 5 hours, so I’m hoping that will clear things up Worry

Just thought I’d update you on the situation: I took her to the vet and she was showing symptoms of watery eyes while I was there. I’m hoping there are no underlying respiratory problems, but have moved her to a tank that’s a little smaller and easier to get around in than her former cage. Her 3 sisters are back in their old cage, which I plan to make a new lid for with even better ventilation, along with moving an air purifier or two into the room. I’ve not heard and sneezing or seen any other syptoms to suggest anything related to respiratory issues, we’ll cross that beidge when we get there, but chances are there’s nothing wrong respiratory-wise, but it was an observation the vet made.
Her diagnosis is this: it’s vertigo and definitely something neurological. It’s likely either a brain tumor/abcess or an inner ear infection. We can only treat for an inner ear infection, so that’s what I’ll be treating her for. I don’t know for sure if it’ll work. If she has an inner ear infection she should start to show progress with the antibiotics I’ve been told to give her. Since she has vertigo she may have nausea and not want to eat. I havnt seen her eat or drink all day, except for a gerber puff and a few oats just now. I got her water through a syringe earlier and have several very shallow water dishes placed through out her cage for her. One hopeful sign is that she spins to one direction a lot, kind of like a wobbly mouse with waltzing mouse syndrome. This is an indicator of an ear infection vs a tumor, so that’s giving me hope. Anyways, my girl is hanging in there, getting lots of rest. She’s been on the antibiotics for two days now, and has 19 more days to go. If she stops eating then the vet can get us a anti nausea medication and hopefully that’ll help. It’s hard to force feed her the antibiotics but it’s what I’ll have to do for now. She should hopefully start showing some improvement in a week or so. Wish us luck! Love

I’m glad you were able to get her in and fingers crossed it’s an ear infection and she gets better!

My Cheeseburger had kind of a similar situation that we treated in hopes of being an ear infection. She slowly improved though she always had a bit of a head tilt and still circled occasionally when stressed or excited but she lived about three months shy of 2 years. I hope your girl does even better. Group Hug

just thought I’d add an update-shes been getting better Very Happy

still holds her legs a little weird and lifts them higher when she walks but she’s able to move around way easier now. Yesterday she took kind of a turn for the worse- she started leaning heavily to the right, falling to the right a lot, and circling to the right. She had been able to climb over her semi burried willow balls, but yesterday she just wasn’t able to. It’s like she was back to square one. But checked on her this morning and she’s doing better. Still leans right but seems to be recovering quicker. She’s dropped a bit of weight though, so we’re going back to the vet to get some anti-nausea medicines made. I’m also offering her critical care and a few different kinds of foods. As of two days ago, she was able to drink from her bottle on her own pretty well. She’s resting a lot, which can only be expected for her, since even moving around a little probably takes a lot of energy for her. It’s officially been two weeks since the start of medications. One more week to go. Hoping my little girl can keep up with the progress. She sure is a little fighter! Thank you to everyone who’s helped me with her Smile
