Hi everyone! I'm getting mice for the first time and Im planning on using a bin cage. I'm worried that if I attach some hanging toys to the mesh that I'll install in the lid (for ventilation), my mice will climb up and chew their way out. Is this a valid concern? If so, what should I do? Thank you for your help!

Hello!
As long as you use metal mesh instead of fabric mesh then there’s no way they can chew out. I’ve used bin cages for almost the whole time I’ve owned mice and they work great, just make sure the mesh is firmly secured to the top (I use tons of zip ties) and the mesh spacing is small (I use 1/4 inch)!

1/2” may be too much, especially for young mice; I’d definitely opt for 1/4”.

@tkstefan I've witnessed an adult mouse squeeze their head through 1/2" mesh and then get stuck. The owner (my mouse breeder) had to cut it out to free it. I would definitely say 1/2" is too big to be safe.
