Hello! So, I have recently been wanting to get a stock of fun new toys for my mice. Other than the typical cardboard things, I have a few other ideas I'd like to run by everyone first.
Plants: I've seen the list of mouse/hamster safe plants. Can I plant my own? For example, can I go outside, take some white dandelion seeds, plant and grow them, and give it to my mice?
Dirt: What kind of dirt is safe for growing or just in a dig box? Is dirt from outside safe, or does it need to be reptile dirt?
Pinecones I watched a video by ErinsAnimals describing soaking the pinecones, rinsing them, and then putting them into the oven. Is all of this necessary if my pinecones are already open? Can I simply freeze them, or just boil them, and not cook them in the oven?
Dried Leaves: Can I use dried leaves in my mice cage (as long as they are mouse safe, like apple)?

Plants
I’m currently growing my own variety of mouse safe plants right now & can answer some of your question.

It’s ok to take plants or seeds from outside as long as they are kept in quarantine (away from the mice and other plants). Plants are Said to be kept in quarantine for a month, but I’ve never heard about taking the seeds. You could probably get away with less time but it would probably take the plant almost if not a month to grow enough to be around the mice without them immediately trampling it anyway  Laughing

But I buy the seeds I use (if I can) to be safe. (Usually cost between $1-$4 for each pack.)

Dirt
I use Eco Earth or ReptiSoil. I wouldn’t trust dirt from outside as it could bring inside many different harmful things to a mouse.

Example: behind my own house are a lot of wild mice & larger animals (raccoons, deer, many different birds,) but the wild mice most likely carry mice specific mites that could of fallen off into the dirt they ran across & would then be brought inside.

Freezing the dirt for 48-52hours and then baking may be safe however. As that should be enough to kill the mites. But it may pose too much of a risk to some.

(I’m also using the Eco-Earth currently to grow my plants. They’ll need to be moved later and have charcoal Added once they are fully grown but for now the coconut-fiber seems to be enough for them.)

Pinecones
I’m afraid I don’t know much of anything about about pinecones in mouse cages yet :,D

Dried Leaves
As long as the leaves are properly sanitized (quarantined and washed? And maybe even baked,) and come from a safe tree (like you’ve stated) then yes they would be safe!

You can even collect the leaves from any safe plants you end up growing so that you know they are already safe & don’t need any additional washing :3
