Mouse with uri not improving
Hi!
I recently got 2 mice and they were sneezing and rattling. I got them on antibiotics (0,03 ml doxycycline twice a day). They’ve been on it for 5 days now but I’m not seeing any improvement yet and I’m starting to get worried. How long does it usually take for a uri to clear up?

I would take them to a vet. They should be improving by now.

That's a strange choice of medication. Usually a URI is treated with a combination of Baytril and Doxy, not just Doxy. That might explain it! In most cases, you should be expecting to see improvement in the first week.

@river I’ve gone to two vets and neither wanted to give me baytril. I don’t know what else I can do for them now.

That is extremely odd, could you call and ask why?
You can technically get Baytril over the counter if needed. I've never done this with my mice, though. @chiroptera any advice?

@River they said they would have to grow bacteria which is expensive and lengthy. I live in the Netherlands so I don’t know if that’s some kind of law here.

Re: Mouse with uri not improving
I see. It does seem like a very hard medication to get there. Google says there's an alternative there known as Otiderm but I don't know about it's use in mice.
It is possible that the Doxy will just take a little longer to work on it's own, is it possible to call and ask if the progress they're making is normal? I imagine in the absence of Baytril this is something they have to do a lot.

Re: Mouse with uri not improving
I have no idea if it's possible for them to ship to the Netherlands, but Enrofloxacin (the generic name for Baytril) is available here, intended for use in birds, but in the right doses can of course be used for mice as well.

Re: Mouse with uri not improving
@River They only gave me a 7 day course so this would be the second to last day. I did see major improvement about 3 days in, didn’t hear them sneezing or rattling at all anymore but it’s come back the same it was before. I will call my vet today and ask what I should do. They did say that if the doxy didn’t work they could maybe work something out.
@chiroptera unfortunately they do not ship to the Netherlands. I’ve tried finding it online in my country. I have found 10% baytril for pigeons but I thought mice needed 2.5%.

Re: Mouse with uri not improving
@sterremeesters You should be able to dilute it - aka mix it with water. I believe that would be uhh 10 parts water to 1 part baytril but definitely double check that math lol

Re: Mouse with uri not improving
You could just dilute the 10% to 2.5% or decrease their dosage to 1/4 of what you would give with 2.5% baytril
I believe if you chose to dilute it you would first do 1 part 10% medication to 1 part water which would dilute it to 5% and one more time, 1 part 5% med 1 part water to get it to 2.5%.
So really 1 part med to 2 parts water, right?

Re: Mouse with uri not improving
Okay I checked with my roommate who's a pharmacy tech, and he said it would be 3 parts water to 1 part medicine. (3 quarters water, one quarter medicine)
He also said that, if possible, you should use sterile water, or distilled if you can't get sterile water.

@chiroptera @EverythingAnimal oh I did not know that was possible. I will look into that. Thank you so much!

Re: Mouse with uri not improving
I got so confused why my logic was wrong then I'm just dumb.
So if you dilute it one time with water, then its 5%, but then the total volume doubled. So to make that entire solution 2.5% you would need to add the amount you added the first time x2, making it 3 parts water.
What I wrote was the same except the first and second amount of water wouldn't be the same size because that would be doing it in two steps instead of 1.
Putting just 2 parts would only dilute the second time by 1/2 because the total amount just doubled when you added the first water.
This explanation is for myself more than anything xd

Re: Mouse with uri not improving
@chiroptera I ordered the baytril and sterile water. Do you know the correct dose for mice? And should I contact my vet for more doxy so I can get them on both baytril and doxy at the same time or will just the baytril be okay?
