BABY MICE IN BASEMENT PLAYROOM!!! 1f600
Confused  Confused Good morning and I’m so happy to have found this forum!
My name is Amy and I’m from CT. Very nice to meet you all!!

I’m an animal lover and I do rehabilitation. I just recently started and I have yet to visit “the mouse territory” I have a domestic pet mouse Stewart who is quite old.
Anyway, the other day I was sitting on my couch with daughter and a baby mouse dashed across the floor in front of us!! I’d say he’s more juvenile but just a little bigger then a quarter and fast as can be!!
I was shocked and tried to catch the little guy but he slipped under the door to the downstairs playroom/finished basement. Upon opening the door he ran down the stairs with 2 MORE! I think they are trying to get into the bag of dog food I have at the top of the stairs.
Soooo, there must be a nest and likely many more. I went downstairs and looked around but found nothing.
I was able to capture one in a Have a Heart trap and I have him in an glass hamster cage with a lid. Poor baby was dying of thirst!! I’m now trying to catch more of the family.
I don’t believe in exterminators, as the way they get rid of the mice is so inhumane and they suffer terribly!! But I know mice reproduce quickly and I’m terrified of an all out infestation in my children’s playroom.
He is a Deer mouse and I’ve heard that they carry serious diseases and my whole home can become infested. I have 2 young children that could unknowingly touch something with mouse poo and pee, and already I’m going to have to disinfect every single toy, furniture and carpeting.

So, basically I’m asking for HELP!! What do I do?
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Also, should I put this little guy outside or let him get a little bigger? I don’t see him having any chance being set free so young and all alone. Crying or Very sad
I’m trying to add pics of the little guy but it’s not working. 😩

Kindest blessings to all,
Amy

No, you didn't do anything wrong. It may be that the person (whoever that may be) who can help you just isn't checking in these days. I'm afraid I'm hopeless about catching mice.

Have you caught any more little invaders? You know, one thing the professionals can do for you, without doing unspeakable things to tiny critters, is to inspect the perimeter of your house for any possible points of entry and close them off for you. If there is a point of entry, then no matter what you do to handle the current problem, the same thing may keep happening in the future.

And if the mousie is fully furred, its eyes are open, and it basically looks like a small adult, don't feel too guilty about returning it to the wilderness. You can leave it with a little bit of food to get it started on its REAL life, but you can't take the place of an adult mouse in its foraging-and-predator-avoidance education anyway, so ...
