Pine nuts?
Quick question...pine nuts...are they safe for mice?
I'm sure I read somewhere that someone gave their mice pine nuts as a treat but I can't find it anymore and I'd much rather be safe than sorry before I give Colin the pine nuts that I didn't use in my pesto.
Thanks

I don't know for sure, but I would assume that if mice can be allergic to pine, expecially pine cones, that the pine nuts would affect them too? This is just my assumption, though, I'd wait for a better opinion.

Re: Pine nuts?
I know that they are safe for hamsters, and they have the same issues with pine as mice do. Also, I've heard time and time again, no peanuts and almonds with no mention of pine nuts. So while I don't know for certain that they are safe... I have never heard that they are unsafe.
That said, I give them to my mice and hamsters on occasion.

Re: Pine nuts?
Thanks for the advice. I might take caution and not let Colin have them...we can eat them instead!

better safe than sorry!
the problem with pine is the phenols (the things that make pine smell like pine) and they way they harm the critters is through the respiratory tract. that's why kiln-dried pine is okay for mice because he high heat burns off the phenols and kills any bugs that may be on it. nearly every wooden toy on the market is made out of pine, but it's kiln-dried which makes it safe. anyway, that's why i think they are safe. but i actually put out an email to ask the expert, out of curiosity. i have always logically concluded that they are safe but i would like to know for sure, since i do give them to my mice. so, i'll let you know when i hear back!

Re: Pine nuts?
Norman's Mom from TFM. I try not to bug her with mouse stuff too often but every now and then I'll ask a question or get her opinion on something.

Oh... Well I don't wanna be judging or anything, but I gotta say. It doesn't sit with me quite well that she hasn't bothered to give me any advice on any of my mice's life-threatening health problems but has the time to clarify on whether pine nuts are okay. -_-

Re: Pine nuts?
I don't think she uses that email anymore. It was specifically for tfm which is no more.

Re: Pine nuts?
I wish she would've mentioned that when she gave me the email. But anyway, I don't wanna hijack the thread, and this isn't the best place to voice my discontentment. I'll let it go. Sorry!
