Digging Area Empty Digging Area

Well they haven't gone crazy over it but they have spent some time playing in it. Hazel especially sparks around about it.

Where's Hazel?

Btw, none of them use the bridge to get into the digging pit.  Only when they want up in the hammocks. They just hop up on the side of the bendy bridge from the boxes next to it or straight up from the floor.

Rina, I think. Sometimes it's hard to tell when I go back through pics.

Both of them. You can see in this pic that they are slightly different colors. An easy thing to see when they're side by side in the right light. Not so much when they're apart.

So much cute! This has been on my to-try list for when I rearrange the trio's tank tomorrow.

I have a hard time telling HoneyBee and Peach apart if I don't look close. Razz

Thank you. I've seen people do it for their hamsters a lot so I thought it was worth a try with the mice. Celyn and Rina used to tunnel around in the bedding a lot when I first got them but haven't much lately. I'm hoping that as they get used to a digging area, they'll use it more.

This is a nice idea Smile not sure how it would work with a barred cage, but may possibly try it in Archie the hamster's tank. Perhaps I can fashion some kind of digging box for the mice instead.

Yes, I think a box would work well. I'm planning to offer that next because then I could cut a small opening at the bottom, so they could get in and out two ways. The bendy bridge has worked well but I think they'd enjoy a bottom entrance even more.

My girls thought this was an awesome idea... Yoko was sparking all over the place! I mixed in strips of fleece and pieces of egg carton, and Yoko would dig down, bring a piece up, and then chew it. So I mixed in some Cheerios, too. Later, I caught Lulie and Pearl all the way at the bottom taking a nap against the side. So neat! Applause

I usually only do this during playtime because it can get real icky.... but my girls *love* digging around in a pile of fleece scraps.

I did fleece with Daryl for a time. Not a digging pit really but he did have a bunch of fleece strips to nest with. They definitely do need to be replaced much more often. The fleece liners too.  I guess because it's not as absorbant? I know with cloth diapering some use fleece as a liner between the absorbent cloth and baby's skin - to wick moisture away from the skin. ....or maybe I'm remembering that wrong. It has been a while. Yeah, fleece wicks moisture away—but it doesn't absorb it, so that's the flaw.

Looks like your idea was a hit, not only with your trio but with abeona's girls, too! I remember that the CritterTrail folks made a multi-level plastic box that could be filled with shredded crinkle paper and was meant for mice/hammies/gerbils to dig and burrow in but these homemade structures are so much better because you can customize them for your animal(s).
