Eating Corn Cob Bedding?
Today when cleaning Scout's tank, I put a layer of corn cob bedding underneath his CareFresh. When I put him in his tank, he started digging away at the CareFresh and finding pieces of corn cob bedding to eat...... Is that healthy? Is it normal? Lol. I just want to make sure it's not harmful to him.

Is he actually eating it or just taste-testing? lol When I first put new stuff down my girls nibble at it (especially Yoko), but by the next day they ignore it again.

Not sure, I'll go observe him for a while and see.

No, he's eating it for sure. He grabs it one piece at a time and runs to a corner and sits and eats.

What a goof. I'd cover it with Carefresh again and give him something else to do, then watch to see if he goes back to eat more or decides there's yummier stuff.
I can't find anything that says it's actually unsafe to eat. It looks like the biggest concerns are that it molds and then the mice eat moldy corn cob, and that the mice eat so much corn cob that they're full and don't eat their regular food.

Hehe, I sprinkled some mealworms and timothy/apple biscuts around his tank and he seems distracted now.
Huh, that's interesting, would it mold within 1 week? I change the bedding and spray down the cage every week.

I have no idea how long it would take... it's said to get moldy if it gets wet, but I imagine it would have to get soaked to really be an issue. I've never had issues with it getting moldy. With a second primary bedding to absorb, I wouldn't really be too concerned about mold, just be aware that it's a possibility.

Somewhat off topic, but I took a video of me cleaning the tank. You can see him interacting with the bedding towards the end, it sure does look like he's eating it. Silly mouse. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=65g1WiRJIw8

Cute video! Hopefully he forgot all about the corn cob now.

What a terrific video! Only wish it was that quick to do a deep-clean .
