Keeping Mice in an Ikea Detolf
Hi there,
So sometime soon I think I'm gonna be getting my first mice!!
I have a hamster right now who unfortunately is near the end of his life and I decided mice are gonna be next once he passes
When I get the mice I plan to put them in the ikea detolf I have which is 16 3/4x64 1/8 "
I was told that the detolf would be too big so what I plan to do is split it in half and then when I go to clean the cage I put them in the other side, and just alternate between the two sides.
Does this sound like a good idea?

That sounds like an okay idea. Split in half is still pretty big... but definitely not too big! If you can, depending on how many you choose to get, you might want to upgrade them to it after a few weeks of taming. A good starter for 3 mice is a 10 gallon, but it wouldn't be impossible to make a bigger space work. You could also try to make the split temporary so you can gradually introduce more space as you gauge their personalities.
With a split cage, later on you could also put a second colony on the other side! Fun!

How do you prevent them from chewing the non-glass walls?

Do you think they would chew on a flat surface? theres no openings or ridges or anythingmuisjes wrote:How do you prevent them from chewing the non-glass walls?
I could always put one of the glass shelves over the wood wall.

Yes. As an example, some people keep mice in a plastic bin cage and as long as all the surfaces are flat, the mice can't get a grip to start chewing. Looking forward to seeing your set up!

sounds like a fun cage for a lot of mice. What kind of IKEA cabinet does it fit on?

I think most people use the 8 cubby Expedit one, mine is just on my regular dresser though, and i use cardboard pieces underneath to elevate the glassmuisjes wrote:sounds like a fun cage for a lot of mice. What kind of IKEA cabinet does it fit on?

I know this post is a year old, but I'm going to comment. I just finished renovating a Detolf for my mice. I kept it vertical instead of horizontal and they love it!

I just wanted to mention that I use the detolf for my ham and the kallax from ikea which works pretty well as a stand
