Is it normal for [new] mice to not hide, explore a lot, and seem oblivious to people approaching the tank from day one?

Not that it's a bad thing! But Fleance only hid the first couple of hours he was home, and after that he seemed to settle right in, explorin and popcorning as usual etc. I know he was well handled as a baby, so maybe that was a contributing factor. But he doesn't seem to mind when even my little siblings press their faces (and phones) up against the glass where he's sitting next to, almost as if he doesn't see them. He barely seems to use his hides, preferring to sleep out in the open (or nestled under some fleece and tissue strips), but he is almost never out of sight.

It's certainly not very common with new mice but each one is different. If he was hand raised properly it's not as surprising. Enjoy your friendly little guy.

Yeah!! definitely feels a lot better than my experience with a pair of girls a couple of years back, skittish beyond belief for the entire time they were with me.
