Hardware Cloth Wire Spacing?

So, I am currently in the process of starting to build a new mouse cage. I have checked different sites, and came to the conclusion that when they refer to cage wiring specifications, they are talking about premade cages. Correct me if I am wrong, but the “No larger than a 1/4”” rule applies to the space between the horizontal bars, so having 1/2” hardware cloth, meaning a 1/2” gap between both the vertical and horizontal wires, is suitable for my 3 pretty large mice. Any thoughts on this?

This is the size I’ve used on my play bin lid and also my hamster cage. I don’t see why it wouldn’t work for larger mice. 1/4 inch would be safest for smaller mice.

I recently witnessed a mouse try to squeeze through and get stuck in what I'm pretty sure was 1/2" hardware cloth, so I would be really wary.
He was jammed in there so badly that she had to cut him out with wire cutters... I would personally just use 1/4" to be safe.
