Is Sage a safe essential oil to use in my house when I have pet mice?

I've not heard anything about it being dangerous, but I wouldn't use it in the same room as them. Mice can be very sensitive to strong smells.

As far as I know, none of the essential oils are safe to use in the same room as mice.  They are just too strong for their little lungs.

It would be in the next room of a two room apartment. I do remember on "Mice Are Nice" that there was a list of essential oils that were actually good for mice. Used as calming them, but I cannot find it now. I did not copy them down and can't remember for sure which ones they were. I do know some are dangerous and that is why I am trying to find that list. Would those files have been copied over to this forum?

If it's in the next room, I wouldn't worry about it. Maybe someone can chime in about the possibility of those files being here.

I remember it was Norman's Mom who gave the information. Does she come to this website?

Logged in to TFM for you, lol. Here's what I found:

Lavender, mint, cedar, pine, and most scents that contain a citrus scent should generally be avoided. Cloves - are fine, not a mouse repellent. Aniseed, Basil,
Bay, Clove, Cinnamon, Fennel, Ho leaf, Laurel, Nutmeg, Star anise, Citronella, Eucalyptus, Lemongrass, Verbena, are among those should not be used around mice - their properties have tested in some cases to be carcinogenic, and in mice, who are tumor factories, they should be avoided.

Good scents are things like calming Chamomile, is a good one.

It involves scented warming oils and use of the oils of the herbs themselves to create the same effect. You can find the things to for this like the oil and warmer at any bath and body type of store.

Believe it or not - it does not produce the smoke (which is the danger of burning incense) and delicate mouse lungs - But the scent CAN actually produce the same kind of calming effect on your mice as it can on your kitty.

Chamomile, Marjoram, and Jasmine are three essential oils from herbs that produce the same effects that those sprays claim to with anxiety, only in a much safer way for all animals (including you) that it can be smelled by. These three, in particular are also safe for mice.

Sandalwood is fine - But Lavender, Rose, Cinnamon, Peppermint and Sage are natural rodent repellents - so don't use them.

You *can* mix oils, but be careful - not all mixing smells good. For instance, Chamomile and Jasmine will smell like dirty feet. Whereas Vanilla and Jasmine or Chamomile smells amazing....it will of-course all depend on your individual likes in scents. I like sweet-scents, for instance.

Thank You!! Sage is out! I see. I will write these three down. Chamomile, Marjoram, and Jasmine. We just got fancy lights with the ability to heat up essential oils. I am using them as a night light, but was afraid to put any oil in.

I just wanted to chime in that I think it's funny that Essentiallysue asked about essential oils. Laughing

LOL Never thought about that! I used to be a licensed massage therapist and used the oils in massage, but I never thought about that connection either. The reason my name came about is this. I have an unusual first name that not many know, and those who do, often don't pronounce it right, and I have always gone by my middle name, Sue. So I just say, it's essentially Sue. Get it?

Jasmine oil is amazing and one of my favourites. I read once about a scientific study that showed the smell of jasmine to be as calming to mice as diazepam (valium)!!

I tried to do some research for you to see what oils are safe for mice but unfortunately I could only find information about what scents repel them :/
