Glass water bottle questions?
Hi everyone Today I have a few questions about Glass water bottles. I'm planning on getting two male Gerbils soon, and I have read that they are great chewers and escape artists. So there's two more things on the shopping list: a lid and a glass water bottle. Of course I read the reviews before asking my mom to purchase something, so I read the water bottle reviews and now I'm kind of scared to get one. Everyone says that it leaks terribly or it doesn't dispense water at all. With plastic water bottles I've only had this problem a few times and now only have 3 plastic water bottles, but they work awesome for my mouse and dwarf hamster. One of the glass water bottle reviews said it works perfectly if you use it a certain way and only fill it to the 'max fill line' . Here's what the water bottle looks like: http://www.petsmart.com/small-pet/food-and-care/food-and-water-accessories/super-pet-chew-proof-water-bottle-14568.html
Read the reviews or tell me by your experience. Thanks! =3

Re: Glass water bottle questions?
Easy fix: Use a glass water bottle but use the dispenser from a plastic bottle!

What she said. Though I still haven't tried it, but there are a few people here who have used this simple solution with great results.

That sounds awesome! Will the Gerbils chew the plastic part though?? Thanks
Re: Glass water bottle questions?
I have no experience with gerbils, but from what I understand, they do chew a lot and destroy things pretty quickly. Hmmm. Maybe provide two bottles, just in case one clogs, and check them frequently. Or could they have a back up ceramic water bowl?

I think that because the plastic part would screw into the glass part, even if they did chew it, it wouldn't be a problem.

I could put two water bottles in the same cage, but I wouldn't want them to chew up my extra one. Hopefully it works without me having to do anything!
And I don't like bowls because any rodent likes to bury them and it soaks the bedding

Be sure to get a metal chew-guard hanger for the bottle -- that helps a lot. I don't have a gerbil but my Syrian ham is a big-time chewer and that guard has totally protected her plastic water bottle.

Re: Glass water bottle questions?
My gerbils never chewed their water bottle. Even when it was in their cage (rather than on the outside of their mesh topper), the most they did was bury it/unbury it when they wanted water. If you give them plenty of other things to chew and shred (because they tended to shred stuff instead of just chewing it) they should leave the water bottle alone.
