Dotty's Litter!!
Squeeeeee. Out of five, there are two babies that have pink eyes. I wonder what color they'll be!! I was just saying that I'd love to have more pink eyed mice. One is a boy and one is a girl. I didn't check the sexes on the rest. I got better pictures on my camera, but the batteries died.
There are mice at Petco who have the sort of markings I was actually wanting. If only one of them were my momma mouse. Maybe my next foster!

Re: Dotty's Litter!!
I promise I won't spam baby pictures every day, but they're so new and little and sweet. And they don't like when you grab their tail to sex them. From left to right, it looks like girl, boy, boy, girl (at the bottom of the pile), and boy. Two girls and three boys. Hmm.
Both of my boys are 23-25 months, so it might be nice to have some baby boys around, but if I kept them all I'd be back up to eight cages!

Re: Dotty's Litter!!
Tell me again how you got this awesome job? Did you just sign up through a shelter/rescue to foster pregnant moms? Then you just keep what you want and give back the rest, with the peace of mind of knowing they will not be snake food? I gotta get in on this!

Re: Dotty's Litter!!
I filled out an application to be a foster home, and then when fosters are needed the shelter sends out emails. When they're eligible for adoption you can choose to adopt them, otherwise they go up for adoption for everyone else. I had to wait a long time for pregnant mice, though! They had pregnant/nursing cats, guinea pigs, hamsters... I fostered a cat but he just needed a few weeks away from the shelter.

Alright, I'm gonna do that. I'd be happy to take hams, too. I'm gonna get some babies someday!

Re: Dotty's Litter!!
I have two colonies that I don't want to mess with right now... But Dotty is staying, so then I kinda have to keep her two baby girls so that their mom will have a colony. But they'll be the perfect trio to keep until they're needed in another colony. I'm thinking of introducing them to Becky and Soong when Peach and Willow leave me (they're 23 months, but hopefully they're not going anywhere anytime soon!).
I'll just have to think twice on the boys. "Fostering" and not adopting is harder than I expected, especially with so few babies.

Re: Dotty's Litter!!
My then-partner and I fostered rats for a rescue, he called it "rat finishing school" it was adorable. <3 Our first babies were the hardest to give up, I really had a bond with one. But mostly we were so proud to send them on knowing that they were really friendly and being loved in their new homes because we had cared for them and given them so much one on one attention. They'd just straight up give us the hamsters, and we'd just keep them. XD

Re: Dotty's Litter!!
Aww, rat finishing school! That's so sweet, and such a good way to look at fostering!
My first litters were hard to let go of because I was trying to rehome them on places like Craigslist. These are hard because I'm already full, but so many of my current mice are nearing two. I want to have these guys around, but I don't want to feel like I'm just waiting for my older ones to die. Of course they're all so sweet, special, and loved... but that won't stop me from feeling like I'm in over my head! lol I guess we'll see what happens in the next few weeks.

Re: Dotty's Litter!!
Haha, you're totally going to keep them all! That's okay, you can do it! I know what you mean though, it feels gross to keep them as replacement mice when others die. I mean, we all know it's not really like that though. If you know deep down that you want boys in your life when your other boys die, you have to keep these boys. It's a rare treat to know them their whole lives, they're beautiful, and they obviously need homes.
You know how it goes, you'll have a lot of tanks for a while and it will be a lot of work. Then some of your furfaces will start dying and you'll miss cleaning those tanks. You'll also be glad you kept the babies because boy mice are awesome.
