Felt vs Fleece
So, all this time I thought I was using fleece to make Scout's hammock, but it turns out I'm using craft felt.... It's made from 100% polyester from recycled plastic bottles, am I using a dangerous fabric? I honestly thought it was fleece all this time

Re: Felt vs Fleece
Fleece and felt are both safe. Fleece will probably be a nicer matetial for hammocks, though.

Re: Felt vs Fleece
Few, that's a relief, I was told on a hamster forum that felt isn't safe for hamsters, so that's what got me worried
Thank you!
Thank you!

Re: Felt vs Fleece
Yep, felt is perfectly safe but fleece is soooooo much softer. Also, my critters seemed to snag their nails in felt more often than fleece.

Re: Felt vs Fleece
Ok, thanks, Scaredy! Here's where I asked about it: http://hamsterhideout.com/forum/topic/133129-are-my-diy-toy-materials-safe/#entry1445717
Apparently, according to them, both felt and egg cartons are dangerous... I already gave Blue a piece of egg carton... I hope it'll be fine.
I'll avoid fabric with my hammy, but I'm glad to know felt is ok for the mice

Re: Felt vs Fleece
I don't use any fabric inside the hammie tanks but I do have fleece snuggle sacks for them for playtime. I used to have a fleece hammock for Splotcvy but she started chewing the chains that held it up. And as far as the felt is concerned, it appears that we have a difference of opinion about the safety of felt in general. We maintain that felt and fleece have the same short fibers and are safe for both hamsters and mice.
They bring up a good point about the egg cartons, one that I have thought about. And for a long time I bought new, unused egg cartons online for the mice. But after a while, I stopped worrying so much about everything. So as long as I don't get any raw egg on the carton- they can have it. But yes, they are correct, they could potentially be exposed to salmonella. I have never had an issue with anything like that, not have I heard of any cases if. I don't have any science to back this up, but I suspect that critters are more resilient to things like that. Mice evolved eating all kinds of icky food that was likely covered in germs. So, we believe that egg cartons can be used with mice and hamsters. If you have concerns about salmonella, then don't use them for with either pet. I never got around to doing research on this to answer the questions I still have but when I do, I will certainly report back what i find!

Re: Felt vs Fleece
I don't worry over used egg cartons at all, but like Scaredy said if you're worried you can order unused cardboard egg cartons. Perfectly safe.
