Does wire flooring need felt?
I'm housing my boy Malcolm in a 10 gallon tank with a tank topper https://www.amazon.com/You-Me-Small-Animal-Topper/dp/B01MYOQ1QR/ref=sr_1_10?dchild=1&keywords=tank+topper&qid=1608755894&sr=8-10 and he loves it. I've heard mixed things about the mesh flooring and paws (mostly from hamster enthusiasts), so I put down felt and it has been fine so far. However, recently, my mouse has taken to chewing and bunching up the felt and just hanging out on the mesh anyway. So, should I bother replacing the chewed up felt, or will he be fine on the mesh floor?

I would choose to replace it with something that’s safe to be chewed like cardboard. While wire isn’t necessarily bad for their paws, it’s definitely not the most comfortable.

I use a sheet of coroplast cut to size, as he has no interest in chewing on it. I opted not to use fabric for hygiene purposes, it's so hard to clean and he makes a huge mess. If he's not on it all the time it shouldn't bother him but part of my mesh broke so for safety purposes, I cover it.

I'd say that if the only thing he has to stand on is wire, that's no good, but if he has other options and chooses to stand/sit on the wire that's only on the topper, he obviously isn't being bothered by it. Unless you see sores or cuts on his feet, I wouldn't be too worried.

I do have some loose cardboard I can put down and see if he likes that better.

I had this type of wire flooring in my big rat cage and I covered it with plexiglass - easy to clean and more comfortable for little feeties! Taking a plastic bin and cutting pieces to size would be a more economical solution.
