Sneezing? Empty Sneezing?

Post by AllThingsGeeky Thu 30 Mar 2017, 10:54 pm

Greetings! I just got a boy from a feeder bin and am wondering if he has a respiratory infection or... a bedding allergy. I have no idea what they were keeping their mice on, if anything, but his sneezing is concerning. His symptoms are sneezing, and sleeping constantly. Although his sleeping might be because he's new. I'm uncertain. Do I need to take my little Isaac to the vet or just switch beddings? He's currently on an offbrand of carefresh called Critter Care Natural. Advice?

Hi there, congrats on your new boy!

Does he have any other symptoms other than sneezing that you can see or hear? How long have you had him? It could also be "box shock" which is basically a reaction to coming to a new place. Personally, I would keep an eye on him for the next couple of weeks and if the sneezing gets worse, or he develops other symptoms, I'd take him to the vet. If it maintains and eventually gets better, I'd put it down to box shock.

Ultimately, if you're not certain, I would go to the vet - better to be safe than sorry in my opinion, (but I'm aware that vet prices can be pretty expensive (particularly in the US - I'm UK based and we have a very good and well-priced vet so I don't worry about cost)).

I just got him about three days ago. So that could be it. He's not really showing any other symptoms other than sneezing. I was just worried because I don't know his personality yet so I can't really tell if anything else is off, and yes US vet bills can be pricey, but I'd much rather pay the cost then lose my new angel. ^^'

Can you get a video of it? Sometimes mice make vocalizations that sound similar to sneezing -- my girl does this, particularly when she's agitated.

Sure thing. Here's a video. It's a little hard to hear, but if you listen close you can pick it up.

As long as the bedding doesn't have baking soda in it, it's fine. First things first, what an adorable little floof! He doesn't look like he is having any sort of respiratory distress. As long as he is eating/drinking/acting normal and not making any other noises... I would wait to go to the vet. It would be stressful for both of you and I think you are most likely dealing with box shock.

If it stays just like this, I wouldn't worry.

I second Scaredy's thoughts. He seems healthy! ☺
