OCD scratching Empty OCD scratching

Post by Candi8383 Mon 24 Jul 2017, 10:01 pm

Hi everyone! I'm newer to having a mouse and I certainly have had a rough time. About 6 months ago my little guy got mites. At first I didn't realize he had them then I started noticing scabs and blood around his ears. Took him to the vet who did multiple rounds of ivermectin which didn't seem to be working so she applied revolution I think it was. That cleared everything up that time. Well it appears he has developed OCD scratching. He has open areas all around his right ear which is now half gone Sad I have tried as many distractions as possible like changing the cage around almost daily, new toys, and even hiding his treat around the cage but he is consumed with scratching. The vets only advice is to do a saline wash and Neosporin. The problem with neosporin is that he grooms it off and it seems to irritate him being on there. I have recently come across 2 products at tractor supply co that is for all animals with itching and hot spots called MicrocynAH and the other is Vetericin+. Does anyone have any experience with these products? I have only found one review that someone used it on their rat safely. Also any advice on how to stop the scratching would be welcome!

I don't have experience with such serious ocd scratching but I shared this new info I came across on another mouse group that seems promising. Maybe mention it to your vet, see what they think?

EDIT: And I think one of our members tried this treatment on one of their ocd mice too?  @scaredymouse?

Thanks for the info CallaLily. My mousey isn't that severe yet but it's certainly grown into a larger area. It's starting to appear on the left side of his face a little. Only problem I have been having is that my vet does not specialize in small animals. She is seeing him because she takes our cats and dog there also. This is her first mouse she has treated so she basically looks everything up as she goes. Not very helpful really Sad

Grayson had the same thing Sad But it passed. Maybe it will go away if you just leave it alone.

I don't think either product will be much use in your situation.  I've had a lot of mice with OCD and the treatment is always behavioral.... distraction, attention, enrichment.  Anything topical that you put on will aggravate the problem.  The only time anything oral/topical should be used on these mice is if you are treating an active infection or infestation of mites... with the exception of Prozac, which should be used concurrently with behavioral treatments.
