Re: 5 Things About You
Fun topic, hope I'm not too late to respond. I love your hair Soren, I had the left side of my head shaved and short hair for a couple years and I really loved it. I think I'm going to do it again I loved it so much. Scaredymouse, we went to SMC at the same time! Maybe you know me or my husband, you said you are an RN. My husband is an RN and he went to SMC at that time too. Here's a picture of us from that time.

Ha! Funny, what a small world it is. He doesn't look familiar. I wasn't studying nursing back then though, I went back to school much later for that. At SMC, I was just working on my general IGETC for transfer to UCLA.

Re: 5 Things About You
1. I have always loved animals and have a connection with them. Animals love me and seem drawn to me everywhere I go. I always make animals friends. Children also love me and gravitate to me. I have had many pets over the years.
2. My husband and I met 22 years ago and our 20th wedding anniversary is the 17th of this month, August. Two days after our sons 2nd birthday. For the longest time we didn't want to have any children but then we did. It took a few years for it to happen and we had one pregnancy that didn't make it but we have the greatest little boy now. He has been the best, really easy and no problems with him. And my pregnancy was the best, very easy and I didn't have any problems. I loved being pregnant and I miss that feeling.
3. I love to read and have collected books for a long time. I didn't read a whole lot growing up but when I met my husband and he suggested some books for me I was hooked! I've read so many now. My favorites are fantasy. My favorite authors are Charles de Lint and Patrick Rothfuss. I love all books though and will read anything that intrigues me. I haven't been able to read as much as I really want to since my son was born but I'm starting to read more again.
4. I love to collect things. I have a collection of living dead dolls, they are creepy but cute, at least to me they are. I collect faeries too, I have some really cute ones. I love rocks and crystals and have always brought home rocks wherever I go but recently I started collecting crystals and gemstones. I also have a nice collection of Disney stuff, I love Disney like a lot of others here do. My husband and I also collect toys from movies and just cool stuff. My husband has a big collection of Star Wars toys from when he was a child and I had some too. We also have Lord of the Rings, Matrix, Frankenstein and the Bride, Popeye and all his friends, Disney toys, Alien vs Predator, Dragons and some other miscellaneous toys. I can post a picture if anyone is interested. The toys are displayed in our guest bedroom, so anyone who stays here is surrounded by toys. It's my favorite room.
5. My hobbies are doing crafts and art, I love to do many artsy things like draw, paint, sew, art journaling, scrapbooking, collage, assemblage etc. I love photography, hiking and camping, just being out in nature, gardening, essential oils and aromatherapy and incense, tarot, playing with my son and playing with my animals.

Re: 5 Things About You
So wonderful to read a little more about you, River. I was crazy about Greek mythology a few years ago; in my second year of college they began a whole class about it!! Loved it.

Re: 5 Things About You
This is a cool thread!
1. I'm 51 years young! I'm single at the moment. In the past I was in 2 long term relationships. One was for 10 years and one was for 14 years. Never been married though.
2. I have two sisters. One older and one younger. Yes, I'm the middle child.
3. I'm originally from Maryland. I've been in Arizona for about 18 years now.
4. I love gardening, but I live in an apartment now, so no gardening but I have lots of house plants. I also love doing all sorts of crafts.
5. And as you might have guessed, I love, love, love animals!

Totally, Scaredy. He's the only one who doesn't approve. The rest of my family has been lovely.

Re: 5 Things About You
Hey, Barbiefly, I'm totally with you on numbers 3 through 5! I'm way too obsessed with stuffed animals, and like to collect stuffed animal cats. Which is bad. That combined with me making stuffed animals mess WAY too many of them LOL
My favorite books are Agatha Christie mysteries, especially her Hercule Poirot books. I just recently got into them but I only own two of the books, so I finished them both in like the first week & the week before our vacation. So now I'm craving more XD

Re: 5 Things About You
River, we have some things in common! I write and play the piano too. The piano is, in my opinion, the most beautiful thing in my house. (including the mice. Sorry girls!) I also write, but besides a series of Pokemon fanfics, all my works are original.

Re: 5 Things About You
Okay, time to jump in here!
1. I'm now retired but it's hard to say from what exactly as I've been a credit manager for a pharmaceutical company (handled all US hospitals), college instructor (writing and literary criticism), rare books specialist at a local book store, reference librarian -- the best job ever! --, lawyer, senior claims adjuster for an international shipping company (handled all high-value disputed loss/damage claims), and, for the six years before I retired for health reasons, a certified pharmacy technician for Walgreens. If I had it to do all over again, I'd have been a reference librarian from the start. My friends have always regarded me as a walking Trivial Pursuit game because I know a little about darn near everything!
2. Even though I've lived in Arizona for 31 years, I still consider myself a New Yorker -- and still sound like one -- as I spent my first 35 years growing up in Manhattan, high school years on Long Island (in Freeport, @CinnamonPearl), adult years in Queens.
3. I absolutely love baseball! The New Yorker part of me is still attached to the Mets but all of me is devoted to the Chicago Cubs. Also follow the Boston Red Sox and the San Francisco Giants. To me, the saddest part of the year is mid-November through mid-February when there is no baseball whatsoever but the happiest phrase in the English language is "Pitchers and catchers report on February xx" because it means that Spring Training is about to begin!! My beloved Cubs had their Spring Training site two blocks away from my house but moved about 3 miles away to a new facility a few years ago so the Oakland Athletics moved in up the block two years ago.
4. Now that I have nothing but free time, I spend a great deal of it reading and am slowly working my way through my numerous bookcases (as well as always having at least a half-dozen books out from the library and dozens on my Kindle). In non-fiction, I like history, biographies and science; in fiction, primarily mysteries ranging from goofy fun ones like the Stephanie Plum series to Simon Brett's snarky Charles Paris and Feathering series. Also a big fan of James Rollins, Lincoln Child and Doug Preston (as a writing duo and separately), Greg Iles, Stephen King (and his son, Joe Hill) and Julia Spencer-Fleming. Also love doing crossword puzzles, playing computer games (no role-playing but 3D Mahjongg, Hearts, Bingo, etc) and volunteering at the local natural history museum where I run the Geology touchcart in Mineral Hall twice a week.
5. I've been obsessed with the Titanic since I was a child and probably have every book written about the tragedy. When my best friend and I went to see James Cameron's movie, as we were leaving the theatre, she asked me why I elbowed her several times during the film: when I explained that I poked her every time I saw something historically wrong with the ship, she almost fell on the ground laughing! About 10 years ago, the Arizona Science Center hosted a Titanic artifacts exhibit and I was over the moon: to be able to walk under the actual crows-nest bell was both eerie and amazing. It's weird, but what I'd always wanted from the wreak, even as a kid, was a piece of coal from the engine room and, believe it or not, there were little thumb-nail sized pieces of coal, complete with certificates of authenticity from the dive that retrieved them, for sale in the exhibit shop! Guess who cried and squealed with glee when she bought one?

Very interesting! Wow, you sound super knowledgable. How much time did you spend at universities?!
Hey, what exactly does a reference librarian do? Sounds interesting.

Hey, what exactly does a reference librarian do? Sounds interesting.
It took me 10 years to finish my BA degree in American Literature as I did it taking night classes while working full time; I graduated high school at 16 and received my BA at 26. The MA degree in American Literature only took 2 years of night classes plus a great honking thesis; did that between ages 28 and 30. The MS in Library Science/Information Technology was also 2 years but day classes while I worked nights; that was done between ages 38 and 40. The JD in Civil Law was a 3-year day program and that was when I worked as a reference librarian, first at the main University library and then, for two years, in the Law library; did the law thing between ages 41 and 44.
A Reference librarian is the person you'd go to to help you find information about something specific, i.e., "I want to find out exactly when and where the opera Aida was first performed" vs "I love the music from Aida and want to know more about the composer." In the first case, I would bring you over to the Music shelves in the Reference room, give you a volume about opera that would include the particular facts you wanted about the Aida performance and remind you that could also check the library's database (in the "old days" that was the card catalog) to find books about the composer, the venue where the debut took place, etc. In the second case, I'd remind you who the composer was, Guiseppi Verdi, and suggest checking out a biography of his life from the circulating book collection; if you didn't know who the composer was (and I didn't, either -- fat chance, haha!), we'd go to the same Music shelves and look at a book on operas to determine the composer and then check the card catalog/database to see what books the library had on Verdi that you could borrow. Reference librarians are a somewhat endangered species in the digital age as anyone with access to a computer can simply Google "Who wrote Aida" and, in seconds, find out about the opera, its premiere and Verdi, all without having to get out of his or her pajamas!
