Re: What are you doing today?
I hope everything goes well at the vet! it sounds like she's had a rough time since she's been there. And it must have been a real shock to get dropped off at the humane society. Poor little lady

Re: What are you doing today?
Miss Pussens had her wellness exam with Dr Danner today and behaved like a little lady. At 7.12lbs, she is a tad thin so the vet recommended boosting the amount of her dry food from 1/2 to 2/3 cup daily and agreed that adding wet food 2-3 times weekly should help get that weight up. Now that Miss P is no longer confined to a small kennel and can walk around, jump and exercise, her muscle tone should start to increase, also adding a bit of bulk. Other than a "soft" heart murmur, she's in good shape for a 10 year old: no overt signs of diabetes, hyperthyroid or kidney disease so Yay! Miss P has also been in Imogene's room and has shown no interest whatsoever -- the hermit crabs, however, are fascinating to her (she only discovered them last night), probably because their tank is lit up and they creep/climb along slowly, easy to see.
I saw my orthopedist yesterday for the last time (changing insurance carriers as of January 1st to be able to get my primary care doctor back; I can keep all of my specialists except for this one :-( -- boo), got cortisone shots in both knees and had it confirmed that my bone-on-bone hips are starting to fuse. No one knows how long I have before there is no differentiation between ball and socket. Hey, if my beloved Cubs can finally win a World Series after a 108 year dry spell, maybe there'll be another miracle and I can remain semi-functional another year or two.

Re: What are you doing today?
Hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving yesterday and recovered sufficiently to dig into leftovers today!
Today was one of my museum shifts and days after holidays are usually busy as people are entertaining relatives or friends from out of town and want someplace fun to take them for a few hours. This year was a bit different: Wednesday was quite busy and today not so much so. My normal 10:00-1:00 shift ran over today (didn't leave until 2:30) solely due to one family that was an absolute joy. Dad was an Iraq veteran and was clearly enjoying being home with his wife and daughters and the older girl (about 12) was an absolute rock nut! I ended up pulling specimens out of the Geology Cart drawers that I don't normally display (too heavy, too fragile, etc) because she was so delighted and knew so much about rocks. Dad was sharing about fascinating rocks and fossils he'd found while stationed in Germany, Egypt, and various Middle Eastern countries. Time really flew by as a good time was had by all, including me!

Re: What are you doing today?
That sounds fun! It's usually a rare occasion that work is fun. But it's fun to watch other people get really excited about stuff

Too true! To be honest, if I was getting paid to be at the museum, it wouldn't be as much fun -- the whole avocation vs vocation thing .

Re: What are you doing today?
We adopted this guy this morning! We were planning on a ferret, not a guinea pig, so I had names picked out for ferrets and spent all my time researching ferrets. We're still working on a new name, and I've spent much of today reading all the little care details that I skimmed over before. Squeeee. There's a bunch. lol
His papers say that his old owners surrendered him because he wasn't getting enough attention, but he's actually not too scared of people. His vet says he has a little head tilt from an ear infection, but it's not anything compared to others I've seen!! He's still on antibiotics, so maybe it'll go away after all.
We already lovelovelove him!!! I think exploring must still be a little scary for him because he doesn't move much, but so far he enjoys sitting with us to eat a snack or burrowing into a blanket in our laps.

He's so cute!! I've heard guinea pigs are very social animals—are you planning on getting him a friend?

Re: What are you doing today?
It's not out of the question, but a friend isn't in the plans at the moment. I'd rather not have two or more cages, so we'll see how he does on his own before we try to pick someone that he'll get along with. In the meantime, he gets plenty of out of cage time and (in anticipation of a ferret room ) he has a whole room to free range in to himself. He met the dog this morning and she licked his nose! lol
He makes some cute noises when he eats, but he hasn't gotten really loud... yet. My parents had a guinea pig that would go bananas just when he heard a bag rustle! I'm looking forward to seeing what sets off this guy.

He's so handsome! The guinea pig my roommate and I had in college would do the whole popcorning-squee-squee-squee routine every time one of us came back to the room -- the pitch of the squees would go up considerably if a bit of salad accompanied us from the dining hall !

Re: What are you doing today?
Taking out the trash netted a real coup today! Someone had tossed a 4' diameter hard plastic kiddie pool onto the top of the tree trimmings in our dumpster this morning and I quickly salvaged it as a playpen for Imogene. It has been given a quick "shower" with the hose and is drying on the back patio and, in the next day or so, I'll bring it inside to give it a good clean before setting it up. I'm delighted as I love the kiddie pool set up scaredymouse has for her mice and hams and figured I'd have to wait until spring when these pools show up again in local stores. Since I can't reach down to the floor (curse those fusing hips!), the pool will be positioned atop a large sheet of plywood set across the arms of facing director's chairs. Imogene will be so pleased as she always wants to get out and run around and will, of course, be closely supervised to ensure she doesn't decide to launch her self over the side!
