I Keep Getting Sick Mice
Hi Guys,
So I have now lost two mice from the same store- I called them and told them that this happened and they don't seem to care. Yet, the other two mice I got from the VERY SAME TANK- THE VERY SAME DAYS- are just fine.
Possum passed away a few weeks ago, and Otter passed away this morning, but I don't want to leave my girls as a pair. I know mice do best when they are in groups of three or more. I already have a quarantine tank, so should I try to get mice from a different location- I'm thinking Country Max(I'm done buying from petsmart, but I have no breeders near me, so pet stores are my only option). I was thinking of getting two more females that I pick out and check for general health, and them keep them from the other two for a while then integrate??? Or should I just...not?
I am going to be upgrading the cage to a 4 ft in length bin cage, so they could integrate into a neutral space. Or am I doing something detrimentally wrong? The mice that have passed have been the most tame ones (aka the most handled), so could I be poisoning them? What could I be doing wrong??
Someone, please help me out. I want my mice to be happy and healthy, so if there is anything I should be doing please let me know.
Lots of love,
A very sad mouse mom 3

Re: I Keep Getting Sick Mice
I’m so sorry for your loss. Unfortunately mice, especially those from poor lines, are prone to many health problems.
Going with a different source may help so long as they get their mice from a different breeder than the one the first store does (not always the case). Here are some tips for trying to choose healthy mice: https://www.petmousefanciers.com/t6-bringing-your-new-mouse-home
Here you can find a list for emergency supplies to keep in hand that can make all the difference while you wait for vet care: https://www.petmousefanciers.com/t25-health-packet#14.
It is highly recommended to quarantine any new mice for at least 3 weeks. More info on that here: https://www.petmousefanciers.com/t7-quarantine. And here is the thread with tips on how to properly introduce them: https://www.petmousefanciers.com/t19-keeping-mice-together-introducing-them.
I hope this helps.
