Constipated baby mouse trouble!!! Empty Constipated baby mouse trouble!!!

Post by Mewb Sat 07 Jul 2018, 7:23 am

I have a baby mouse, only a couple of days old, and I can't seem to get it to poop. I am really worried. There do seem to be very dry poops in her little nest, does this mean she is pooping? How do I get her to poop more normally? I currently give her puppy milk mixed with a bit of water and give her belly massages. She doesn't seem bloated. It has been over a day since I have seen her poop. Please help me, I really want to help her! Thank you!
Ps. This is my first time taking care of a baby mouse so any tips in general would be appreciated!

With such a young one, you should be able to see the pooping happen in connection with your belly massage. Baby mice do not just mess whenever and wherever -- mama mouse gives each baby a post-dinner licking to stimulate the digestive system to push out some waste so that she can clean it up right at that instant and it won't be contaminating the nest. Yes, she eats it -- but we do not ask that you do the same!

Make sure you are feeding an adequate amount at the appropriate time interval (you're still on the every-two-hours routine, right?), and that you are massaging the correct portion of the belly. Remember that you are replacing mama's gentle, licking tongue. In case you have not yet watched it, Creek Valley Critters has a multi-part tutorial on baby mouse care posted on YouTube, and that can help you to refine your technique.

Another thing to remember is that, since the food going in is liquid, without much solid material in it, you may get very little solid waste coming out. Or it may be runny or pasty. You need to watch out for diarrhea, because not only can that dangerously irritate the skin of the baby mouse, it also presents the danger of dehydration. Unflavored Pedialyte (or any brand of the equivalent formulation) is a good thing to have on hand for such an emergency.

Taking care of a new baby mouse is a tough task, and even the most knowledgeable baby mouse take-care of-ers know that they will not be successful from time to time. Do your best, and let us know how it's going.

Unfortunately the little mouse took a turn for the worse this morning. After being lively and looking well overnight, she suddenly was unable to keep her balance and kept tumbling over. I spent nearly 2 hours doing anything I could to improve her but sadly to no avail. I am absolutely gutted...

It happens. It happens too often. When the body goes into shutdown mode, it is virtually impossible to turn it around. Even with us big ol' human beings, if somebody is in danger of starving because of lack of food intake for long enough, whether from an intentional refusal to eat or from a debilitation that causes appetite loss, there comes a tipping point where even forced tube feeding will not jump-start their system and can cause great systematic distress because the body has, in essence, forgotten what to do with food inside it.

You worked very hard for your little foundling, and there are a great number of us out here who have been where you are now. (Three years last month for me and little Bobby, Noche, and Paiva, all lost in less than 24 hours. I just found them too late.) Stock up on tissues, keep some with you wherever you go. Find a place of contemplation and cry yourself to exhaustion at the indifference nature shows to its tiniest and most helpless. Think of a good way to remember this little one that means so much to you now. And determine that this will not destroy you, but will leave you able to face this same situation, should it ever happen again, with the same determination to succeed, even in the face of the greatest odds against you.

And consider giving a home to some deserving little mousies. Then you can come back here and tell us all about how special they are!
