Loss of hair and scabbing
I left to stay with my aunt for a month in a different state so my brother was taking care of my 2 mice. They were already familiar with him and he knows how to care for them so I thought they’d be fine. One mice seems completely fine and normal but the other is grooming himself excessively to the point of hair loss and a lot of redness and scabbing on his face. Could it be because he’s stressed I’m not there? The cage is clean and they have enough food water and play time so other than my absence their routine is still the same. They’re about one year old now, is she just getting old? I’m cutting my trip short so I can go home to be with them but I still won’t be back for another 2 weeks. Other than his skin he’s acting okay, he runs on the wheel a lot and seems active and fine so do you think he’ll be okay by the time I get back? And could it just be happening because he’s stressed?

To me, it sounds like stress. However, your mouse could also potentially have mites or lice. Maybe have your brother try to do a mini health inspection of your mouse to look for any moving bugs. If there are mites or lice, they can spread to your other mouse.

Okay I asked him to inspect them closely. I suspected mites as well but i wasn’t sure since the other mouse looks 100% normal no hair loss or anything. Thank you!

What’s the protein content of their diet? Sometimes higher levels can cause irritated skin.

I feed them mouse dietary pellets mixed with “mouse and rat tropical carnival gourmet food” That one has a lot of seeds and it’s made up of treats like dried bananas and pumpkin seeds more than food so I mix it in with the pellets. I also give them tiny amounts of peanut butter once in a while as a treat.
