Cork hot pads?
I have a bunch of (currently) unused cork hot pads, various sizes, taking up space in my cupboards. I found this on Pinterest and thought it was kinda neat...
Anyone know for sure if cork is safe for mouses? Any idea how I could clean it? Just scrub it?

Re: Cork hot pads?
I checked around on my hamster forums but I couldn't find a trustworthy answer.

Re: Cork hot pads?
It's often used as a form of rat poison, and since rats and mice are so similar, I doubt it'd be safe.

Thanks for checking, scaredy! I looked around at other forums, too, but it was all kinda inconclusive. I'll try to research the rat poison thing a bit.
What do you think, @CallaLily? lol

Re: Cork hot pads?
I thought it was safe cuz they sell those little cork tunnels for small pets? Yikes, that would be awful if it turned out to be poisonous.

Re: Cork hot pads?
It isn't poisonous, to say.
//poisoning mentuon???I guess I should tag it,//
People soak them in oils or grease, and when the rat eats it, it causes a blockage.

I was coming back to say that that's all I could find, too. I guess you could just watch to see how much they chew...

Re: Cork hot pads?
I seriously doubt it could be effectively cleaned - it is so absorbant and can't exactly go through the wash intact.

Re: Cork hot pads?
I mostly meant clean it since it's been left untouched in the cupboard for a few years, I could definitely just toss it when the mice are done with it. I don't know. Maybe I'll just find some other project to do with it. I appreciate everyone's input.

Re: Cork hot pads?
If the only risk comes from a blockage caused when they eat it, then really it's as safe as plastic, isn't it? As long as the mice aren't eating it, it's not a problem

Re: Cork hot pads?
Natural cork bark I would think is safe. I'm not sure how the hot pads are made. Are they bits of cork glued together or whole pieces of cork bark? If it's little pieces glued together, do we know what type of glue?

Re: Cork hot pads?
Does that look glued? Or glued like... wine corks glued together?

Re: Cork hot pads?
I do think it looks like little pieces of cork pressed together in some way. I have no idea with what or if it's safe though.
