Hello from the north east, meet brownie

Meet Brownie: I got my little mouse as I was walking through the pet store, I couldn’t own basically any animals at the time where I previously lived and saw a cage full of white mice with one little orange one. The girl said he shouldn’t have been in there and once she put him in my hand I couldn’t resist. I was going through some tough times and saw him in the cage and could relate to my life, so I brought him home! He was so small (3wks?) now is getting old, he’ll be 3 by August!
He’s a special mouse, very clever, very sweet! His cage is unlocked at all times, he has about 3x4 ft area to explore on that is basically puppy pads. He’s a couple feet off the ground and the room has one door that I shut and keep an eye on. He’s never tried to escape the whole year I’ve been experimenting with this (his older age may have something to do with it) I don’t recommend ever unlocking your cage however!
I got him a girlfriend however she passed away from what I think was cancer (she was full albino) they had a litter of babies and i kept one that turned out to be orange too! But they can’t be together now or they fight like crazy, and it’s Brownie who is the Alpha male. However I do bring them together to visit all the time.
I’m here to learn a bit more and offer any help or experiences
