Mouse Supplies List
Hi everyone,
I'm very interested in getting a pet mouse! I've been doing my research on them and know that I want a single male. I've made a list of the supplies I know I will need for him and just wanted to see if their was anything I'm missing for the little guy?
10 gallon tank
Locking Lid
Substrate (Carefresh or Kaytee)
Food Dish
Water Bottle
Wheel (Flying Saucer)
Hide House (Igloo)
Food (Vita Kraft Vita Smart Parakeet)
Toy (Puzzle Playground)

Re: Mouse Supplies List
Hello and welcome mice also love Millett, found in the bird food section. Also, maybe add a ladder (found in the bird toys section) or something he can climb, my Mickey loves climbing. Other then that, your list looks pretty complete to me
You can also make things for him to climb on out of popsicle sticks and a hot glue gun. The possibilities are limitless with those! And they are nice because they are "throw away" toys - so when it get's too dirty, just toss it and make him something new to keep his tank interesting and fun for him. I learned here that they are called MES, which is Mouse Entertainment Systems!

Re: Mouse Supplies List
I have one girl who goes nuts over climbing, so I agree that a ladder or other toys your mouse will be able to climb on will be fun for him.
You'll also want to get him some chew toys. Two of my girls love popsicle sticks for that, but I also give them wooden, mineral, and toy chews (like bridges or hide-aways) for variety. They also like to chew on hay.
I'd also suggest getting two water bottles to keep in his tank. That way, you have a backup in case one stops working. I haven't had an issue with it yet, but it can be really serious if a mouse gets dehydrated.

Re: Mouse Supplies List
Don't forget a hot glue gun and Popsicle sticks! Mice love having homemade MESs to play with. I always consider them a necessity.

Re: Mouse Supplies List
Great start. I agree on adding chews. Mine love willow or Apple sticks, but they'll also chew on simple things like cardboard. The more toys you give him, the better. As others have said, you can build toys to climb and hide in out of popsicle sticks. You can also use cardboard boxes, paper towel/tp tubes, cardboard egg cartons. Fleece and felt are great and safe materials to make hammocks out of. Sisal, hemp, or jute twine are safe materials as well. Check out the diy section for ideas.

Re: Mouse Supplies List
An always-on-hand item that all mice love is a simple toilet-tissue tube. They run though it, hide in it to eat a treat, shred it and just thoroughly enjoy it. TP tubes are great to combine with popsicle sticks to create hides, castles, you name it!
This had been one of my girls' favorites since I introduced it a few years ago...and it's still going strong!
This one was very popular as it served as a climbing structure and a hide.

Re: Mouse Supplies List
I got my mouse today! He is an albino and was going to be a feeder mouse but not anymore! I've named him Pip. I will try and get some pics of him tomorrow to show y'all. I've gotten just about everything that I had on my list except for the puzzle playground. I got a comfort wheel instead of the saucer but even though it's small he can't seem to spin it so will be replacing it. He's loving the parakeet food! I put in a toilet paper roll and he has been running through that. I'm also going to be trying the MES's. Thanks for all of your help!

Re: Mouse Supplies List
Congrats on your new mouse. What size is the wheel? He may just need some time to get the hang of it. I hope you can share pics of Pip. My first mice (as an adult) were PEW, so there's a special place in my heart for them.

Ooh, congrats on your new boy! I once tried to name some twins Pippy and Poppy but I got so confused. I can't wait to see pictures, PEWs (pink eyed whites) are always so lovely.

I know I said I'd try to have the pics now but I had to work today and it has gotten pretty late on me. I'm off tomorrow and will for sure have some pics of Pip for y'all then. I have thought of a food question though. Should I be giving him a certain daily amount or just fill his bowl daily?

Re: Mouse Supplies List
I keep Mickey's food bowl filled at all times and the I give him treats a few times a week. In addition to that, I always have millet in his tank.
