Gillys tumor is so big!
Just when I think it can't get any bigger, my god, it gets bigger. It is the size of a large grape on her chest. But she walks very carefully to keep it off the ground. The skin is totally healthy, but it's obviously filled with blood and other things, i'm sure. My husband and I are absolutely horrified to look at it. It looks so uncomfortable at the very least. But she doesn't seem to mind at all! I have no right to put her to sleep until she gives me some sort of sign that she's ready. She can still hold food and eat, drinks fine, she even runs on the wheel still! What?!? And everyone still loves having her around, so I'm just waiting. But I cringe every time I see it. Its so awful. I had her out today and gave her a little health check, she's fine. I asked her "aren't you tired yet?" And I put her back and that little goofball got on the wheel. What a fascinating lady. Anyway, she is very pale and her tail is cool, so I imagine she's anemic and her hemoglobin continues to drop and the blood collects in the tumor. So it shouldn't be too long now.
I love that little mouse so much, I hate watching that tumor take over her body.

That's really sad I wish you and her strength to deal with this.

Re: Gillys tumor is so big!
It's shocking how large the tumours can get mice are amazing creatures, I don't know how they cope with them. They seem to refuse to let anything get in the way of their enjoyment of life.

I'm glad she's still enjoying life right now and I hope when she does grow tired that her time comes peacefully.

I'm so sorry to hear Gilly's tumor has gotten so big. She doesn't sound like she is ready to go just yet, but when she is, I hope she goes peacefully knowing you are right by her side.

That's so sad. Poor Gilly. I'm glad she's still enjoying herself, though. What a trooper!

It sounds like Little Cow's situation. Even when everyone was telling me to euthanize, I refused until she was ready, and she passed on her own terms. I hope Gilly can have the same when her time comes. It's good to hear that that old lady is still fighting on.

Re: Gillys tumor is so big!
I struggle with it everyday. All I can do is reevaluate her twice a day and let her guide my decisions. It is truly amazing to watch her living her life without a care in the world.

Re: Gillys tumor is so big!
I sympathise and empathise. I went through this last year with Gemima. She grew the most humongous tumour on her side. It was a very 'good' place to get one because she could live with it for a long, long time and not have it interfere with anything. Quite a horror show to watch it grow every day!

I know what you mean about a "good place" for a tumour Brynne (if there ever can be a good place for a tumour). I've had mice with tumours in very unfortunate places, and others in "good places". It can make a really big difference in how long they can keep going for.

Re: Gillys tumor is so big!
Oh my gosh, this tumor is so big! I can't take it. I literally have to remind myself every day that it's not my job to *do* anything. So what, it's big. But it's on a happy mouse, that still climbs and grooms her sisters and jogs on the wheel and steals her favorite treats out of her friends hands. She poops, forages around for her favorites foods, and drinks. But i cringe when i see it! You can see the blood pooling in it but she walks with a hunched back to keep it off the ground, so the skin looks great. There will come a time in the not too distant future, though, when it will be too big for her to lift food to her mouth or clean her face. But that day is not today!
I just needed to say... ew! it's yucky! I hate it! and it totally freaks me out. I know there is no way it's going to open up but it's still an irrational fear I have. oh my god, it would be a crime scene! ack!
the end.
p.s. gilly says she's fine and to get over it.

Re: Gillys tumor is so big!
When I have a mouse with a huge tumour, it makes me feel really guilty when I look at it - even though the mouse is clearly happy. Why is that?! They just look so awful you feel like you should be doing something about it. But there's nothing you can do, and it would be more cruel to end a happy life just because I'm not comfortable with the tumour.
So I definitely empathise with you there scaredymouse.

I remember when Twix's tumor got like that. It's rough. Hugs

Re: Gillys tumor is so big!
Like i feel if anyone saw it, they would put me in jail for animal cruelty! It's so ridiculous to feel like this...
I totally get what you're saying. I felt the same way and because of that feeling I was very careful with which pictures I shared once Twix's tumor got really big or of Seren or even during the worst of Daryl's eye problems. Silly because it wasn't anything I did wrong or could have prevented - but it still sort of felt that way.

Re: Gillys tumor is so big!
It's interesting food for thought. I don't really believe in rushing animals out the door the second they seem to be having a hard time. It's why I couldn't euthanize Little Cow, even with so many people telling me I should. When I used to keep fish, I would have a rule that I would only euthanize sick fish who didn't try to swim away when I netted them.
How come Furgie was in pain? She doesn't have a tumor too, does she?
