I know this is a few days late, but I work at a PetSmart so maybe I can shed some light on the situation. We have no official age limit for adoption vs. being sold, it's based on health. So in all likelihood an older mouse would be put up for adoption because of becoming feeble (or kept at the store with medical care if sick). I was actually allowed to adopt an older mouse with cancer so I could take him home for mousie hospice care. But healthy older animals could still be sold.
That being said, mice sell somewhat slowly but not that slowly. If the petcare person really had adopted his brothers and had them that long then they'd have made an effort to get him into a home. My favorite animals almost never stay in the store long because I sell the heck out of them whenever someone comes in who seems like they're invested in finding a friend instead of the cheapest possible living decoration.
Sounds like the person you talked to was either confused or lying.

Thank you for your input! The general consensus seems to be that she was lying. So I won't believe that Monster is two. Unfortunately, now I'm back to square zero in guessing his age.

DVirginiana, do you have any idea about these supplier mishaps? Do you know how long shipments haven't been going out? Do you have any way of finding out?

I'm not aware of any issues with suppliers. We're still getting mice in at the stores in my area. I'm in the south though, so your area probably has different suppliers. The people working at most stores don't really know anything about the suppliers. I not even sure how much contact management has with them, like whether it's direct or if they order through corporate who then orders from them.

Ah, that's a shame. I guess there's not much way to get any sort of guess on Monster's age then, unless I can get him next to a quarter and turn it into a guessing game. >.< I ought to just pick something and call it done.

I have a hamster that will be three this year and has never slowed down so far and is far more active than my one year old one and my other one that is roughly one.

Hamsters have a longer life span than mice do, though.

I thought Agent Bauer was really young, like not full grown when I got him, but he never really grew. He's just my tiny little high-strung buddy. I always assume any mouse at a pet store that has already reached adult size is between three and six months.

River - it depends on the species of hamster, not all have longer lifespans than mice, and those that do typically only live an extra 6 months - 1 year. Most hamsters can only expect to live 2 years, so 3 is pretty old indeed.

^ That's if they're from an unethical breeder - typically, robrovoski hamsters from a good breeder live 3 years, while a mouse lifespan is typically only 1-2. That's still a bit longer. I believe syrians also have that 2-3 year lifespan. Not sure about any of the others, though - I've never owned them. Confused

I've had one hamster in my whole life, and she was a robrovoski, she lived a good 4 years. She didn't slow down at the end either, she was pretty much as active as always, (And as crazy as always, trying to attack me Neutral

). But from what I've heard, mice live 1-2 years, and might make it to 3 if you are super lucky, but they slow down a lot at the end of their life.
