Mice sneezing Empty Mice sneezing

Post by Illumimoe666 Sat 15 Oct 2016, 3:32 am

My fudge has been sneezing for a few days now. At first I thought it may have been allergies because of the previous bedding so i immediately switched to paper based bedding. It's been a little less than a week and she's still sneezing! Her behavior hasn't changed tho. She completely acts the same (Very hyper and curious). Also I don't notice anything else wrong at all. Her nose and eyes seem to be fine, she's still eating and drinking and running on the wheel. I can only hear her sneezes when i'm handling her, so i'm not sure if she sneezes in her tank too?
One think I did kinda notice tho is that whenever I hold her: for the first few minutes she seems fine but will eventually start to sneeze. The sneezes aren't constant tho. She may go through a minute or two with no sneezes then will sneeze a bit more for a few dozen seconds. Her sneezes also sound more like lil "pop" sounds. Another thing I noticed is that she seems to start sneezing more when she is more active and running around, but when she's lying just next to me she barley will sneeze! Nothing has gotten worse I just want to make sure if it's something that can be easily be treated and if there's over the counter stuff i can give her?

Another thing is I saw a couple videos of mice with Respiratory infections sneezing and their sneezing was A LOOOT different that Fudge's sneezing.

Sometimes URI symptoms can vary for different mice. Minor URI's usually make the mice sneeze less. The ones you heard were probably making URI sounds, which a lot of mice do especially if it is a major URI, but some don't. They can have all or one of the symptoms; sneezing, clicking, wheezing, etc. If you just got her and these are her first few days with you, than it could be box shock, especially if she only sneezes around you. Have you tried testing for different allergies by removing all the wood from her cage and see if that helps, or removing one or two food items at a time? It can sometimes be really hard to figure out what the problem is in these little guys.

Can you get a video of it? Some mice - like mine and Olis - make a noise similar to a sneeze as a normal part of their vocalization.

However, you did mention a chattering coming fom Marshmallow. This could have been a URI, which is obviously very contagious, and likely spread to Fudge.

When she first started sneezing it was when I used aspen. A day after I changed it too carefresh non wood bedding hoping it will help. I've had her for about a month or two at most, I still had her when Luna and Sol were alive. I have a strong feeling that Sol died from URI but her symptoms got bad right away and died quickly. I Heard of people giving their rats antibiotics that are sold for fish but cure their URI. But of course rats are different and I want to make sure the antibiotic is safe before doing anything

Hmm, that would be bad if it spread. I kinda did but it was hard to her but I definetly will try again! Should I separate her from my newer mice till I know? A bit after Sol died I completely changed their bedding type. One thing I didn't change is their food, I'm still using the same bag of food as I was when Sol died, so could that be infected? Before their food got infected with beetles living inside of it! Of course I threw it out and got fresh food, but I don't see any bugs at all and I always make sure the bags are tied so no bugs get in again

I would separate her, in case it hasn't yet spread to the others. It's best to make sure she gets treated and onto antibiotics before she can interact with the others again. I don't think the food is infected, but deep cleaning and disinfecting the cage and it's items might be in your interest.

Maybe, but then again they do get really sad when away from the group, so a few weeks away for treatment might actually make her more sick. I learned that from experience, with my poor little Suzers.

I would just take her to the vet and get some baytril. That's the simplest thing! And definitely don't separate her out. It won't help. If she has a URI, all your other girls have already been exposed to it.

Thank you for all the help Smile I'v been meaning to update that I was able to get her antibiotics and she's getting so much better! For a few days she got worse and her behavior was really low but now she's so much better. Her breathing is pretty much normal and she's continuing to improve!
