Female colony question
So, everyone always says 3 female mice is the perfect colony, but I've seen people have 5 or 6 in a colony, so does it have to be 3 for them to be a happy colony or is that just a minimum?
Re: Female colony question
As far as I understand it, there are three roles or positions that need to be filled to have a complete colony. The boss mouse, the under mouse, and the mediator mouse. (These are my words for them, not official terms lol). So three makes a perfect colony, but I think that as long as those roles are filled, it doesn't matter too much how many you have, e.g. 5 or 6.
I have 2 mice right now. It's not ideal, and I intend to get more to complete my colony. But 2 is the bare minimum, as the little ladies hate to be alone

Thanks! I'm hoping to get a colony of 4 in my 20 gal. Just wanted to make sure that more than 3 wouldn't cause fighting or anything.
Re: Female colony question
Nope, it shouldn't cause problems! Three is basically the minimum, so four should be just fine!

Re: Female colony question
Four is fine! I wouldn't recommend housing over six together though, as if there's more than six they tend to break off into separate colonies and well...separate colonies aren't particularly friendly with each other.

Re: Female colony question
Agreed. Three is the ideal colony, but 4 or 5 is fine. But 6 starts getting tricky. I have been keeping a large colony of five happy ladies for quite some time.
