Re: Barred cages?
For gerbils and hamsters I've had over the years, I've used tanks, DIY bin cages, and barred cages. Personally I prefer tanks. I think they are secure, easy to clean, fun to decorate, and nice looking. But there are a lot of cage choices out there. I guess it comes down to personal preference.

Another question - if you clean the tank with vinegar, how long should you wait - if at all - before putting the mice back in? I've got water stains on the sides of the tank that I'd like to clean up.

Re: Barred cages?
I mostly use diluted vinegar to clean my mouse tank. Afterwards I rinse it out and dry well.

Re: Barred cages?
Lots of people who make bin cages put windows on the sides and mesh them over. I think they use a soldering iron or a hot knife to cut through the plastic. If you wanted extra ventilation that could be an option? You could look on google images for "bin cage" for a bit of inspiration if you wanna go that way

Once the vinegar is rinsed out well, if you stick your head in the tank and don't smell anything, you should be good to go.
